Weiler avoided the tag of Kathy Tiffany, the Doherty's Survives A Scare Doherty's kept its un defeated record intact witha thrilling come-from-behind 8-6 victory over a hustling Little John's ball club. The winning blow came in the sixth with two outs and two men on base. Doherty's leadoff batter Mike Rogers hit a sinking line shot to left center. In a "do or die" effort LittJ/e John's outfielder Dan Stanowski attempted the diving catch. However the ball skidded past his outstretched glove. Rogers was the hero with his inside- thepark home run in a game which possibly meant more to the club than any other contest this season. It was one of those games when everyone forgets current team records - Little John's is still winless in six attempts while Doherty's is undefeated Little John's took the early lead and it might have been l^rggr except for a baserunner who got caught off second base with no outs on a routine fly out That double play in the second inning shortened what should have been a bigger rally. Little John's still held a six-run lead that held up until Rogers' sixth inning home run. The bottom half of Doherty's lineup deserves much of the credit. They contributed seven of the ten hits during the contest Except for Rogers' -blow and two-run single by Matt Oik, it was Randy Vauk going three for three. Tom Roach going two for two plus a walk and Mike Peterson adding two hits to hfil^Doherty's to its sixth straight Dave Miller and Bill Peterson led Little John's 15- hit offense with three hits each. Dan Stanowski. Dave Schmitt and Gary Snell had two hits apiece with Stanowski driving in two runs. Defensively Doherty's Jim Wayman made a great leaping catch on a line drive at second base Dan Stanowski came up with a circus catch on a windblown fly ball while Dave Miller retired Jeff Meddings with a good stop of a hard grounder at first L. Taxes, inflation, the RTA and the Chicago Cubs were bom. I have a feeling that tough decisions were thrown in somewhere along the line. I know a lot about tough decisions. I umpired Little league baseball for seven years. You learn to make snap judgments when a bunch of irate parents gets that certain look in their eyes. But I have made some difficult choices away from the field as well. I was called upon to make one such determination about a month ago. The opportunity to return to my hometown presented itself. After several sleepless nights, some spouse-to-spouse con ferences and a great deal of soul-searching, I decided to seize this chance. It was far and away the most difficult Scorecard By Jeff Stern choice I've ever had to make. It has been a short stay, but certainly a pleasant one. I wish I could say I was totally unhappy here and that I couldn't wait to leave. But that is not the case. I leave a staff of true professionals, who actually give a hoot about the product they present to the com munity. I leave many new friends, who helped make my wedding day the hap piest day of my life. And I leave a public which has been gracious and very helpful McHenry is lucky to have concerned citizens like Dick Rabbitt and Pat Wirtz, who keep the community abreast of happenings on the local sports scene. Because of them, this job was so much easier. Earl Walsh entertains us with comments and memories carrying a true hometown flavor. And the many contributors who supply news of the various softball. baseball and golf activities are also invaluable to a city such as McHenry. I thank one and all for your cooperation and input There was no singlefactor that led to this dee-is/on. but catcher for Favorite Sports to complete an inside-the-park homer. Favorite Sports prevailed however, winning 9-4. STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD Legion Nine Whips one benefit did appeal to me: I'm going home. The roots that took hold during my formative years grew deeper than I ever suspected. I feel the need to return to familiar surroundings. My wife and I will still reside here, which provides a strong sense of deja vu. When I joined the Plain- dealer staff, I had to com mute from my Burlington apartment. Now I'm commuting to Burlington from my McHenry home. In summation, I'd like to thank everyone at the Plaindealer for their help and support. Although the stay was short, the memories will last a lifetime I wish the athletes and coaches of the area the very best of luck in all you do And to all of you, may God bless you and keep you well. May all your decisions be easy ones The lineups were entered in the scorebooks. The pitchers had warmed up and were ready to go. One of the players had even inserted a pinch of snuff between his cheek and gum The only element missing from this typical baseball scene was a team of um pires. Tuesday's Connie Mack League game between McHenry and Belvidere was cancelled when the men in blue failed to show up for the contest The league rules award a forfeit to the visiting team in such cases, but because of a mixup between McHenry coach Russ Williams and the officials association that supplies the league umpires, the forfeit may be withdrawn (see story >. Williams organized an intersquad game after the Belvedere squad packed its bags and went home. McHenry was one player short of supplying two teams, so Williams put on the catcher's gear and set up behind the dish. McHenry had posted its first American Legion victory last week by defeating Richmond, 7-3. Williams had trouble with umpires in that game also, but in a different way. Dave Smith was sailing along with a one-hit shutout through four innings when disaster struck. Smith led off with a single, took second on a fielder's choice, advanced to third on 'a passed ball and tried to' score on another error. Smith bowled over the Rich mond catcher and was ejected from the game. "That's a high school rule." said Willies. "I told the ump that we play by National (professional) League rules. So then the ump said it was a malicious slide", whatever that is." Despite all of the hassle, it was McHenry's best showing at this early juncture in the season The locals slammed out 11 hits, with Bob Greve. Smith and Tim Evans collecting two each Evans Where Have All The Umpires Gone? A mixup in schedules has been blamed for the lack of umpires at Tuesday's Connie Mack League baseball game. McHenry coach Russ Williams learned of the clerical error after the game between McHenry and Belvidere was cancelled when the men in blue failed to show up. "I sent the Fox Valley Association my American Legion and Connie Mack schedules," Williams explained. "But they thought the Connie Mack schedule was just a duplicate of the Legion schedule, so they disregarded it." Because the home team is responsible for umpires according to league rules, McHenry had to forfeit Tuesday's game. But Williams said the association will ti> to reschedule the game, thus eliminating the forfeit. "That was very nice of them," Williams said. Williams is otherwise concerned about the umpire's K situation, however. He cited a case in which iust one um Mgonquin and another in whic! an umpire was unaware of the league rules worked a game against Alt A McHenry player was ejected on the basis of a high school rule; the Legion uses National League rules. "One ump also tola me that they have more games than umpires. Tnc one to work&em," Williams said. Barbara Sue Williams, the coach's wife, telephoned the association in hopes of obtaining umps for Tuesday's game, but was unsuccesful. It was an outstanding effort nonetheless. and Dave Williams drove in two runs apiece McHenry scored in the third and never trailed after that That run came home when Greve singled, Joe Bauml sacrificed him to second and Mike Dillon singled him home. Bob Bryniarski and Evans led off the fourth with base hits before Williams delivered a two-run double. Williams was out trying to stretch his hit to a triple. The locals added two more in the fifth After Smith's exit. Evans hit a two-run triple to make it 5-0. McHenry's final runs scored in the sixth on a walk to Greve. John Doessel's triple and a passed ball Chuck Dicker relieved Smith. allowing three unearned runs in the seventh A single, fielder's choice and three errors did the tricl$ With the major leaguers on strike, this team is the only hardball game in town Local fans will have a chance to see its team in action this weekend McHenry hosts Freeport in a doubleheader Sunday at 1p m On Tuesday, they face Lake in the Hills and on Wednesday Crystal l^ake is in town The weeknight games begin at 6 p.m. and all games will be played at McCracken Field Mini Leaders Continue Winning Ways The Astros maintained their National league lead of the McHenry Youth League mini division by winning both scheduled games this week The first win came at the expense of the previously unbeaten Sox, 2-0. The game was superb pitching duel between the Astros' Brian Condon (three hits, 15 strike outs) and the Sox' Matt Hopp (three hits, 14 strike outs). The hitting power for the Astros was supplied by Tom Brefeld with an RBI and a run scored. The Astros' other win was a 16-8 defeat of the Giants in a game that was close until a 13-run outburst in the Astro half o f the third inning. Mike Haffner pitched an excellent game with Brian Condon hitting a round tripper with the bases loaded. The Giants were led by Ronnie Robinette's home run, Dave Wilkonson's double with the bases loaded and his good defensive play at third. Earlier in the week the Giants' good play was rewarded with a 16-0 shoutout of the Twins Robinette pitched a con sistent game A double play by Scott Wood and Sean Leonard paced the defense Joey Gilmore led the Giants with two hits The Cubs tayed in the NL race with a 13-10 win over the Pirates in an abbreviated four-inning game. Dave Cable pitched two good in nings. striking out six and leaving with a 10-0 lead. Kelly Roach was three-three at the plate with Johnny Lee reaching base all four times. The Pirates battled back late in the game led by Keith Rogers two-four and Jason Weisenberger reaching base three times and scoring twice The Yanks took over first place in the American league as a result of the Sox' loss and their 1-0 victory over the Dodgers. The game provided a super pitching confrontation bettween the Yank's Brandon Pasternok and the Dodger's Danny Sweetwood. Jason Brown delivered the game winning hit in the bottom of the fifth, the only hit off Dodger pit ching The Twins broke into the win column by defeating the Indians in a close contest. 3- 2 Brian Withrow and Ron Steinsdoerfer combined to pitch the win, with Joe Beyer doing the hitting and scoring the winning run The Indians were in the game all the way on the fine pitching of Jamie Shaver and two hits by James Heinmiller. The Indians runs were scored by Heinmiller and David Fino. In a very close game all the way the Brewers ex tended their winning streak to four games in a 10-9 game with the Tigers. Ryan Penoyer and Jeff Carl shared the pitching duties with Carl and Ryan Miller both hitting two extra base hits, one of Carl's being a home run Mike Lazar went three three including a homer for the Tigers. The Tigers played two other games in the week, winning once and losing the other The win, a 15-4 decision over the Dodgers, was paced by Ricky Stark's single and homer and Mike Lazar's single and double. Lazar also pitched and struck out 11. Chris Wolff added a timely base hit for the winning Tigers. The other Tiger game was a disappointing 25-6 loss to the Braves Tom Johnson and Jamie Franklin both handled the pitching chores and the trio of Peter Low, Bobby Koczor and James Awbery all scored three times Two double plays were recorded that game, one by each team The Braves turned a DP on a Franklin and Johnson combo, and the Tiger's Bob Klontz to Jason Eckert worked one as well.
