Don Ask Legislation For Non-Game Wildlife A measure creating the Illinois Non-game Wildlife Protection act. in which a special fund would be initiated in its treasury for a voluntary check-off system for individuals to contribute a portion of their income tax refund, has passed the Illinois General Assembly. Non-game wildlife is that wildlife that is neither hunted or fished, including many endangered species here in Illinois. Sen. Jack Schaffer, R- McHenry county, sponsor of HB 681 in the Senate, ex plained that the intent of the bill is to preserve and protect non-game wildlife, especially endangered species. A check-off system on individual Illinois income tax returns is also established by the bill, Sen. Schaffer noted. Individuals may contribute $10 (maximum $20 jointly) or the amount of the refund due, whichever is less, he added. Based on experience in other states, this bill could generate in million for the and conservation of r game wildlife strictly volunteer contributions interested Illinois "This bill' a source of funding for non- game wildlife without requesting a special ap propriation," the 33rd district lawmaker stated. "The Department of Con servation has stated its support for the concept this bill offers." In an almost identical measure in the 81st General Assembly, Sen. Schaffer passed HB 2200 in both Houses, however, the governor vetoed it and a motion to override the veto failed. Senator Schaffer stated that he is hopeful that HB 681 will meet with the gover nor's approval and urges everyone who supports the bill to contact the governor and indicate they feel it should be signed. Police: Reconsider Your Driving Habits L Captain Hugh S. McGinley/commander of District 15, Illinois State Police in Oak Brook, is asking the motoring public to reconsider their driving habits to make the upcoming Fourth of July weekend both safer and less costly. Captain McGinley offers some practical tips to help you get the most mileage for your money and to protect you and your car. 1 - Drive 55 mph - 50 is even better. Speed increases wind resistance and reduces gas mileage. 2 - Dnve "featherfoot" style...start slowly and accelerate gently, except when entering expressways. Avoiding jack rabbit starts and jerky acceleration can save 2 mpg 3 - Plan ahead. Don't tailgate and avoid unnecessary braking. It saves on gas and it's safer, too. *v 4 - Drive at steady speeds. Sharp increases of speed and lane changing can waste 1.3 mpg. 5 - When possible, drive freeways instead of heavily travelled city streets with stop signs. They're safer, too. 6-Take care of your car.' If mpg decreases, get a tune- up. Keep tire pressure at the full load recommended. When replacing tires, consider radials. These tip6 can give you many more miles of safe, economical driving. Captain McGinley also advises that July 3 through July 6 will be the Independence day weekend. Illinois State troopers will be participating in a "Holiday Emphasis Patrol" along with Operation C.A.R.E. (combined accident reduction effort). All command, administrative and specialty personnel will be out on the road air speed checks, i both moving and hand radar devices and conducting drive checks. "The Illinois State police intend on doing their part on making this Fourth of July weekend safer for all of us'*, states McGinley.
