A number of famous WLS radio entertainers spent a day in Oakhurst at the in­ vitation of their friends, Mr. and Mrs. Harry N. Wright. A well known doctor in McHenry county, Dr. Emil Windmueller, died at his home in California. Johns burg jumped right off to a good start in the annual inter-city series, with the McHenry A's by taking an interesting 4-2 victory at McHenry. FORTY YEARS AGO , (Taken from the files of July 3, 1941) Under the leadership of Mayor R.I. Overton, campaign has been starte in McHenry to raise funds for the United Service Organizations, the total amount for the whole country being placed at $10,675,000, to equip and operate more than 300 service clubs in com­ munities adjacent to military camps, naval bases and; defense centers throughout the United States and our overseas bases. Private Glenn Draper of West McHenry has com­ pleted his basic training and is niw assigned to the 310th Coast Artillery (Anti- Aircraft) regiment at Fort Sheridan. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of July 5, 1956) Karl Tomm, 16-year-old McHenry high school s t u d e n t , t e m p o r a r i l y assumed the duties of state superintendent of public instruction in Springfield. He was named to fill the office of State School Chief Vernon L. Nickell at electiofrheld at the twenty-first annual Premier Boys State spon­ sored by the American Legion Department of Illinois. Winners of University of Illinois scholarships in McHenry county included Richard Wissell, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Wissell, Sr. Six scholarships are available in each county, awarded on the basis of grades in the examinations. They exempt .the winners from tuition fees for four years. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 9, 1971) A bombshell exploded at the meeting of the board of High School District 156 when President Jam€fe Althoff introduced an offer made to . the McHenry Counts college for the sale of East campus and Mc- Cracken field. The McHenry County Viscounts Drum and Bugle corps returned to McHenry after a successful weekend of competition in which they earned two first place ratings and one second. At Palatine the corps received a second place trophy in the "best musical unit" category of the parade, topping five other corps and all bands. Plaindealer Lensman Wayne Gaylord received his first national award when he captured an honorable mention in the 1971 National N e w s p a p e r c o n t e s t . Gaylord's winning photo was titled "A Sneak Thief' and showed a minor leaguer safely arriving at second base. Heavy Top* v Spinning tops is a popular sport in Malaysia.
