Watz Underrated John Ritter--Everybody at ABC knows that without John there would be no "Three's Company." He's an ex cellent comedian, aqd has jjlso proven his worth as a straight actor in varioufr4eUPflicks and features. Has a big future ahead of him. Robin Williams--Many people don't realize that this hyperactive comedian singlehandedly rescued "Mork and Mindy" from disaster. His uncanny ability to im provise can't be duplicated. Christopher Lloyd--The man they call Rev. Jim on "Taxi" plays his role so well that one wonders whether he's re-enacting some of his own experiences. Overrated John Davidson--Sure, he's handsome, but he is much too plastic for my taste. McHENRY OPTICIANS 1301 RIVERSIDE (Across from fh< DR. How Bruce Spring steen, who always performs Gary U.S. Bonds' 1961 classic "Quarter to Three" in his act, went to see Bonds perform in a not-so-classy lounge. How the Boss jumped up onstage to sing along with Bonds, and how Bonds didn't even know who he was. And how the two--along with the E Street Band--got together to make the first Gary U.S. Bonds album in maybe 20 years. So all you need to hear here is that Dedication is a tremen dous album, a record loaded with the elusive quality of "soul" and as musically hot as a jukebox on overload. Bonds' voice is weatherworn and craggy: his emotions piay right on the surface. When he covers Jackson Browne's "Pre tender," the automatic impres sion is "So that's how it's sup posed to sound." When he sings the Beatles' "It's- Only Love," you almost wonder who could have written that soulful melody. And when the title tune cranks up, you don't think at all. You dance. Rock and rollers don't age well, as a rule. Gary U.S. Bonds is the delightful exception to the rule. Briefly Noted: Joe Walsh/ There Goes the Neighbor- hood/(Asylum). Joe Walsh is a great guitar player, an asset to the Eaigles, and a solo artist who's so funny and clever--so self-consciously funny and cleveif-that he wears very thin very (juickjy, So ^though "Ufe of Illusion" is a good single, it's thinner by far than "Life's Been Good." And it's the best thing on the album. Except for the cover, which is really funny and clever. As was intended. Exposed: A Cheap Peek at Today's Provocative New Rockl(CBS). Have I got a deal for you. For around $3 retail, you can get a double album sampler of new songs by CBS/Columbia/Epic artists the likes of: Adam and tha AnU, Lovarboy, Steve Forbert, Rosanne Cash, Judas Priest, the Romantics, Garland Jef fries, Elen Foley and the Boomtown Rats. They are all interesting artists, most of whom get far less radio atten tion than they should. It's worth three bucks to hear them--in fact, it's a bargain at twice the price. Adam Ant PERSONALITIES The new Paul McCartney album--produced by Beatles' mentor George Martin--wilt be, out soon. But the Rod Stewart live album won't be out at all Warner Brothers decided that it would rather release an album of fresh material, so Roddy was sent back to the studio ... The controversial Dead Kennedys have a hit single in England, despite the fact that the song is banned on the BBC and charts won't even print the ban**' name on their lists. Entirely by word of mouth, "Too Drunk tc (expletive deleted)" has sole 40,000 copies ... Forget al to at jive about "East is East anc West is West and never the twain shall meet." The nex* country/western songfest-and rodeo extravanganza is going tc be held in Peking. ! TV coawutoa URVtCfS. MM
