Congratulations to Wonder Lake Miss Philanne Scully is the new Miss Wonder Lake for 1981-82 receiving her crown from Miss Karen Beres the 1980-81 Miss Wonder Lake. Philanne will now compete in the Miss McHenry County contest held every year at the county fair in Woodstock. It was a tough job for the judges to come to a decision f Philanne and her parents, William and Jay Godshall. BEAUTIFUL FOURTH Because of the marvelous organization of the Ski Club, American Legion, Jaycees, and the Business and Professional Woman's Club, Wonder Lake was able to celebrate the Fourth of July in style. Beginning with the Ski Show on Friday, July 3, which is always done so professionally, to the fireworks, then the parade on July 4, the Miss Wonder Lake contest, and finally the street dance, there was something to enjoy every minute. The parade showed the cooperation of the com munity with so many en trants and also the crowds along the parade route. This whole event is being planned again for next year, so we really have something to look forward to. Area Margaret Karas 385-4934 Trail Bikes Not For Roads Cyclists using trail bikes on roads are asking for legal action against them. It is illegal in McHenry county to use these unlicensed motor bikes on any township, county, city or state roads. Not only are they a traffic hazard, but residents are subjected to the raucous noise and exhaust, both very annoying pollutants. Trail bikes give the riders a sense of personal power, exhilaration, and are cer tainly a test of endurance and skill. But they are to be used on dirt trails, as in dicated by their name, not on public roads. July 17 Minton's birthday. This young lady has overcome a serious burn accident as a child to become one of our area's best skaters. The largest birthday cake will be the one with 80 candles, when our gracious Mr. Lee of the Lakeside Inn has his day on the seven teenth. So many of us have benefited from Lee's generosity these many years. May he have as many more birthdays in good health and peace as he wishes. Little leaguer, Mark Foss, will celebrate on July 20. The same date is the important one for Pearl Ann Zabroski. July 21 is Angela Sexton's birthday. Belated birthday wishes go* to Jackie (Marlene) Stromley who celebrated her natal day July 6. Carl and Jackie spent the Fourth of July weekend with family in Iowa and Minnesota. Quite a trip for a few days. ALL IS WELL Last Wednesday, the lady of the house, Anna Odttn, was in the ' basement washing clothes. She felanced up at the window, only to see a Mack animal peering back at her from the well. Yes, the smallish Mack animal also had a white stripe down its back. After consultation with husband, Harry, it was decided to do nothing and hope the animal would go away. But this is a well constructed window well, and the skunk couk! not get out. Hours passed, and finally Harry designed a long wire rod, to which he attached a pail of water to be lowered into the well. Anna added some celery and lettuce, which their new "pet" promptly enjoyed. The next day, Harry gingerly lowered a plank into the skunk's new nest. Anna put vegetables and fruit and water on the ground above. She was not about to catch a field mouse for the skunk's dinner, as was suggested in the book in the library on the care of wild mammals. . If the Odoms' new visitor hasn't found it too com fortable in the window well, the skunk has by now returned to its family. All's well that ends well, without even a trace of a scent.
