McHenry county is one of the few counties in the state which shows a healthy net earning from its various major county offices each year. This is due mostly to strict economy in the offices and efficient management. The report approved by the board here shows a total gross earning of $28,714,76 by the four major offices for the half year ending June 1,1941. There is a red hot race in the McHenry county amateur baseball league. Johns burg and Woodstock are tied for first place, but somebody will have to topple when the two leaders meet on the Johnsburg diamond. McHenry, with three straight wins rests in third place in a good spot to jump a notch or two. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of July 12, 1956) July 18 is an important one for the McHenry State bank, for it is then that the location of the fifty-year-old in­ stitution will be changed from Main street to the beautiful new building on the corner of Green and Elm street. They will be open for business in the new address. The bank opened for business Sept. 10,1906, in the Brefeld building on the south side of Main street, with the late Julia Stoffel Reihan- sperger as the first em­ ployee. The ' widening of Elm street is scheduled to begin within five days. The state highway department gave the contract to McHenry Sand & Gravel company, which was low bidder with the figure of $76,568. The street between Richmond road and Riverside drive, will be widened 11 feet on each side, resurfaced with blacktop and there will be new curbs throughout. E. Joseph Gausden has been named Civil Defense chairman for the city, and is making plans for McHenry joining the nationwide "Operation Alert" some time on July 20. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 16, 1971) The present abundance of teachers was pointed out by Miss Helen Curran, assistant superintendent of High School District 156, when she told board members there had been 302 inquiries about 11 positions to be filled next year. At this time, three have signed contracts, eight positions remain to be filled and there are 109 names with credentials currently on file. By a vote of 6 to 1, the board of Consolidated School District 15 approved an organization plan submitted by Dr. Robert W. tyos, newly appointed superin­ tendent. The opposing vote was cast by Annie Cuda. The changes were necessitated by the administrative split between Districts 15 and 156 earlier this summer. Their children who are over 30 years old wanted a quick explanation. I can do that, they are married 37 years! Thank goodness the Dawsons have a good sense of humor so we all got a good laugh for the day. DISPLAY A SUCCESS Where were you Sunday, July 5, at 9 p.m.?
