Early Railroad Days Relived Safety Hints PAGE 1» - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. JULY 17. lttt Sights, sounds and smells of the early days of railroading will be relived by visitors to the Illinois Railway Museum Sunday, July 19, when the museum celebrates its fifteenth anniversary of operations. As two steam engines roll through the prairie of McHenry county, baked beans will be cooking QQ caboose stoves. Visitors will be tasting some of the same foods that trainmen ate on their cross-country jour neys. Special attractions for the celebration will be caboose rides for children, gandy dancer demonstrations and a band concert of railroad songs perfumed by 24 ' members of the Mt. Vernon Iowa high school band. A special train of five cabooses from area railroads will carry children on a three-mile round trip over the museum's demonstration railroad. A two-man team of gandy dancers will provide a demonstration of spike driving throughout the day and will allow any visitor to try his or her hand at driving railroad spikes. _ Also many other pieces of equipment which are not normally opsn-f will be available for public in* spection, including the private car "Ely." The "Ely" provided transportation for several presidents. Also the cab of a diesel locomotive and the cabs of the two operating steam locomotives will be open for the public to go in. Admission entitles visitors 'fro*. to unlimited rides in equipment operating that day. The museum is located in Union, 6 miles northwest of the Route 20 Marengo exit of the Interstate 90 tollwaj The museum is open 10:30 a.m. to 5;30 p.m. weekends and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. week days during the summer. More information is available at 815-923-4391. The Illinois Railway museum is a not for profit organisation. By Secretary of State Jim Edgar Speed is a major factor in many motor vehicle ac cidents. Although excessive speed may not be the primary cause, when it is combined with other violations, mechanical failure or errors in judgment, it often results in disaster. Illinois law provides for maximum speed limits, and in some cases, minimum speed limits. When minimum limits are not posted, drivers still may not drive so slowly that, they interfere with the normal movement of traffic. You may drive at the maximum allowable speed only under safe conditions. The law provides that no person shall drive at a speed "which is greater than reasonable and proper with regard to traffic conditions •ana the use of the highway, or which endangers the safety of any person or property. Speed also must be reduced, if necessary for safety, when: 1) ap proaching and crossing an intersection; 1) approaching and going around a curve; 3) approaching the top of a hill; 4) traveling on a narrow or winding roadway; 5) hazards exist due to pedestrians, traffic, weather or road conditions, and 6) it is necessary to avoid a collision with other vehicles or pedestrians. If you have any questions about the Secretary of State's office, please fed free to use our ' toll-free telephone number (900-251- 8990). REASON 4 Specialized Patient Care, the Trauma Center and the Poison Control Center should be more accessible to the region's populated areas. The new site location on Illinois Highway 31 and Bull Valley Road is much more accessible to the region's population cen ters. Only two miles from the center of McHenry, the pro posed medical center could bet ter serve patients from Crystal Lake and the other communities served by the present hospital. Action needed . .. now! Recognizing that time is a critical factor in the cost of the project, it is most important that we begin to build the new medical center as soon as pos sible. Therefore we ask your support of this project.
