Slinking into town recently, all but unnoticed by fans, was John Cale. Cale--whose association with new music goes back to the Velvet Underground, „ Patti Smith, Iggy Pop and Jonathan Richman--has put out one of the most interesting albums of the year in Honi Soit. His live performance is perfectly com pelling. John Cale Dressed in a black T-shirt and pants, white tennis sneakers and shades, the Welshman ap pears quite oblivious to his au dience, even though they are crowding the stage, inches from his scrawny form. Yet this self-involvement manages still to involve the crowd. Cale is so intense, so absorbed by his material that he radiates power, magnetic energy. Song topics range from Hamlet's Ophelia to World War III (combat being his usual metaphor), and Cale feels no need to apologize for his in tellectual imagery. The au dience, youthful as they were, appreciated this lack of con descension. In fact, they were mesmerized. Solid backing was provided for Cale by his new band: the wondrous pixie, bassist Peter Muny; Gatling-gun drummer Robert Medici; hellcat guitarist Sturgis Nikides; and young keyboard/sax magician Jim Goodman Supporting acts were San Francisco's Appliances, who were abysmal, and New York's Translator, who were better. UPDATE Pressure from the powers- that-be almost cancelled the week of Clash shows at New York City's Bonds nightclub, but the teenaged children of the city's chief building inspec tor saved the day. They asked dad why his department was shutting the doors on their show--he looked into it, decid ed that there was undue ha rassment, reached a compro mise, and let the show go on ... Wendy 0. Williams, lead singer (using the term loosely) of the Plasmatics, and band manager Rod Swenson were cleared of obscenity and breach of the peace charges in Milwaukee, having been cleared of similar charges in Cleveland two months ago. It * started on the Plasmatics' winter tour, when their high- -spirited performance caused a police riot or two. Williams had her nose broken in one melee and Swenson was rendered un conscious; they plan to file charges against the police . . . WBCN-FM in Boston is be ing dropped as an ABC affiliate because they refused to broad cast a Nestles candy commer cial that was part of a King Biscuit concert tape. WBCN boycotts Nestles as an editorial policy due to that company's sale of infant formula in under developed nations. Unusual to find a popular medium that puts it money where its cons cience is. « ALBUM REVIEWS Takoma Records, best known for preserving obscure blues ar tists and cult acoustic guitarists, is entering the pop sweep stakes with a couple of very ac cessible albums. Steeleye Span's Sails of Silver reunites Britain's folk-rockers in a pretti ly palatable offering. And the self-titled debut by the Roulet tes is a collection of top-40 tunes made to order for the dashboard radio of a Chevy-- convertible. TV COMPUIOC SERVICES, INC
