From early June until late September, the 11 vessels in the Maine Windjammer Association sail the scenic coast from Portland to Bar Harbor. If you long to "get away from it all," turn back the clock and take an adventurous vacation, consider setting sail on a Maine windjammer schooner. Maine windjammers offer cxciting, economical vacations, with the opportunity to carry on a century-old sailing tradition, feel the salt and wind on your face. and discover the unspoiled Maine coast. The age of sail comes alive each year when 11 windjammer schooners set sail from the ports of Camden, Rockland and Rockport, Maine. From early June until late September, the windjammers sail the scenic Maine coast from Portland to Bar Harbor. Spruce-covered islands, quiet coves and secluded bays pro vide well-protected waters and some of the finest sailing on the New England coast. A living part of our past, Maine windjammers set sail on Monday morning and return on Saturday afternoon, carrying between 22 and 38 passengers from all walks of life. Whether you are new to sail ing or an old salt, the thrill of being on board one of the last windjammer schooners is the same. These few remaining windjammers recapture the days in the 19th century when thousands of tall-sparred schooners, carrying cargo and fish, plied the Atlantic coast. It is a tribute to their dedi cated captains and crews that the schooners survived at all. Every ship is Coast Guard inspected, and the vessels are generally/aptained by their owners, all experienced licensed sailors. Ranging from 64 to 121 feet in length, the schooners are among the last American mer cantile sailing vessels. Most are retired^argo and fishing ships, *• rebuilt and rerigged from the keel up. Others have been built in re cent years, designed after the leading schooners of their day. No two windjammer vaca tions are exactly alike, because the sailing route each week is determined by wind, tide and weather. Life aboard a schooner is in formal and spontaneous. One can relax on deck in the sun, swim, read, photograph the spectacular surroundings, or explore small fishing villages. You are welcome to help the crew with sailing, hoisting and furling the sails, casting the anchor and navigating, or you may help in the galley. The camaraderie developed among shipmates leads to im promptu song fests, story telling and special memories^ Because all the fresh air and sun can lead to ravenous appe tites, passengers cafi count on delicious, homemade meals, cooked over a wood stove. Freshly baked breads and muffins, a variety of roast meats, chicken and fish, piping hot soups, vegetables, fruits and salajl^'make for wholesome dining. \ One nightVeach week, tempt ing Maine lobster is steamed over a driftwood fire on the beach. Ports of sail are all easily ac cessible by car, bus or plane, and rates for a six-day Maine windjammer vacation range from $275 to $325 per person, including all meals.
