PAG) is 17 - PLAINDEALER A traveler's primer to painless packing and flawless fashions Vacation time! The best part of summer--time to travel far and free from the daily grind, -ftvjr, too often, even the best vacation can be an exhausting experience if not planned will beforehand. The key to rest and relaxation from start to finish is simple organization. A travel agent can help organize where you go and how you get there, but some things--such as packing--are left to you. The Fiber Information Center (an editorial service of the Man-Made Fiber Producers' Association) won't pack for you either, but it does offer helpful tips on packing that will make the getting away easier. First, check weather condi tions at journey's end before de ciding what to take along. Don't let weather changes from state to state catch you by surprise. And, just as you should dress to suit the climate, choose clothes that fit the activities on your vacation itinerary. Pack clothes that are basic and comfortable to wear. Pick a favorite color and build a mix- and-match wardrobe around it--coordinated with com plementary accessories. Too often, travelers over- pack, dragging clothes that never leave the hotel closet. So, plan for a variety of outfit changes from a minimum number of components. Think practical not only in the amount of clothes you take along but also in their care instructions. Take wash-and- wears of man-made fibers-- silky polyester, sleek nylon and WBDNESDAY. JULY 21. Mil high performance rayon. Blends of polyester and cot ton-or polyester and rayon are other fashionable and easy care apparel options. These fabrics make any gar ment virtually wrinkle-free. Just wash it out in the hotel sink and hang to dry overnight and you're ready to go. After all, nobody likes to pay hotel dry cleaning bills or return home with suitcases full of laundry. No matter what the weather forecast, it's always smart to pack one or two special duty garments. Unless a visit to the desert is on the itinerary, a lightweight nylon shell raincoat is a must in case of a sudden shower. And, for that too-cool airplane cabin or restaurant, an acrylic or rayon shawl provides just the right comfort. Once a wardrobe is selected, the moment of truth -- packing--must follow. The trick to traveling light is not only what goes but what it all goes in. Lugging luggage that is itself too heavy makes no sense at all. A wise choice is a bag of light- weight, water resistant parachute nylon. Tightly packed nylon luggage holds more and the contents shift less than in hard luggage, minimizing wrinkles. \ Another lightweight luggage option is olefin--the same dur able man-made fiber found in carpeting and upholstery. Both nylon and olefin luggage will stand up to the rigors and rough treatment of travel with nary a worry. , When packing, put heavy items such as shoes in the bot- torn of the bag (or in the bottom near the hinges of a hard suit case). Clothes won't be crushed or wrinkled as easily. To economize space, stuff stockings, scarves and ties in the toes of shoes. Cosmetics should always be packed in a plastic bag to prevent spills. And, never pack jewelry or other valuables in luggage that will be left unattended or checked through. Finally, a practical packing motto--"r0ll don't fold." Rol ling avoids unwanted creases and is more space-efficient. With just a little forethought, you can forego the travails of travel and enjoy that vacation all the way through. 3609 W. ELM ST.
