SEPTEMBER If k Twice Told Tales HKTV YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept 17. 1931) Six Chicagoans were rescued from drowning Sunday afternoon in a drama of heroism and tragedy at Fox Lake as Frank Gans of McHenry saved them at the risk of his own life. The cause of the near tragedy * SV * (\°% & was a sudden storm which broke over Fox lake when wind, rain and hail beat across the' treacherous waters of the lake, making it dangerous for crafts unable to reach shore. Gans was in a speedboat used as a demonstrator for the Hunter Boat company and was able to rescue the six persons clinging to a small boat. An early fall wedding was solemnized at St. Mary's church, Sept. 12, when Miss Kathrine Blum and Mr. Paul Brefeld were; united in marriage at St. Mary's Catholic church. To every school operating a bus service for their pupils in Illinois, a booklet is issued, entitled "Safe Tran­ sportation," and it contains the rules and regulations 1981 governing school pupil transportation in the state. The City Council met in special session with the greater part of the time spent in discussion of con­ tinuation or termination of Daylight Saving Time on Sept. 28. "Old Time" or Central Standard prevailed. The ordinance provides that the city revert to Central Standard Time on the last Sunday in September. A family breakfast will follow in Mathews hall near the church. The local council recently purchased a tract of land on which they expect to erect a building, perhaps during the coming year, which will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the McHenry organization. Following many appeals and placing of courtesy tickets on cars, the City Council finally found it necessary to pass an or­ dinance prohibiting all-night parking on all city streets. This will replace what was termed the snow-removal •if i f ordinance passed last year to aid the street department in removing snow. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 22, 1971) The city of McHenry will receive a total of $1,148.01 as its share of a state distribution of $1,884,071.14 to counties and municipalities as their share of the July state income tax collection. Payment is based on population, which is 6,772 for McHenry.. Friends of Mrs. William (Marilyn) Bacon of Man­ sfield, Ark., formerly of Ringwood, will be interested to learn that for the second year, one of her paintings has been judged best-of- show at the Grand Prairie Festival of Arts, Stuttgart, Ark. A school budget for 1971-72 calling for expenses of $187,560 for such items as salaries, text books, pupil transportation, utilities, furniture, equipment and athletic supplies was ap­ proved by the board of Montini Catholic school. Expected income from tuition and book sales was set at $64,450. A sophomore with a medical technology major, Flood is a member of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity, the student association, Com­ munity Activities board, Alpha Lambda Delta and the track team. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Flood, McHenry. Earns Pibt Certificate Andrea A.
