SI Keepin' Healthy Today's column is written for the amateur and novice ' football players - regardless of age. If you have a Dudding * football Cardinal or Bear in your family you may want to pass this information on to him. In terms of frequency and severity of injuries, football • is more hazardous than any other sport. Each year, more than 230,000 people are treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with football and football equipment. Most of the injuries are caused by long- cleat shoes, by spearing with a helmet, or by sharp edges on the outside , of an opponent's protective equipment, such as those on shoulder pads. Because of its rough body contact, football is inherently hazardous. TOT decrease the risk, the Illinois Department of Public Health has several suggestions which can make this sport less dangerous. First, getting equipped to play the game. Players should wear soccer shoes which have short, flat-heel cleats to reduce injuries to other players. They should also use helmets which provide as much protection as possible for the face, without having protrusions which coind injure o p p o n e n t s . A l t h o u g h "spearing" an opponent with a helmet is against the rules, it is a frequent cause of injuries. Second, getting ready to play the game. Make sure your young football player participates only in games where everyone on both teams has learned the rules of the game and follows them. Let them play only with others of their own size and weight group. Be sure the field they use has been inspected for holes or litter ana is kept clear and in good condition. Third, playing the game. Tackling and blocking should be limited during practice. Half of all football related injuries occur in practice. Some experts believe that hard tackling and blocking should not be a part of practice but should . be limited to actual games. If your son is injured, be sure to check with your doctor before, he itarts playing fdffilfcir'W&itn. Repeat injuries can be very , hazardous; sometime^ more '] so than the initial injury*1 Encourage game officials to enforce the rules stringently so that everyone can enjoy playing the game without fear of serious injury. Laugh not too much; the witty man laughs least. -George Herbert. 'Old Indian Cures' A researcher in mixed cultures says folk remedies often referred to as "old Indian cures" are actually European in origin. Most of the leading herb and plant medicinals used today by Mexican-Americans living on the South Texas border are im ports from Spain and Portugal. They were apparently intro duced to the Indians by white explorers hundreds of years ago. As the Indians migrated and handed the cures down from generation to generation, the idea evolved that the medicines were part of the original native culture.
