Retiring from the board were Don Luerssen, Clarence Aavang, and Charles Beard. The new board reorganizes this week. Melvin Von Bergen presented the proposed resolutions, based on responses from a questionnaire sent members and in person contracts by the resolutions committee. Members approved a resolution stating that "any increase in the state income tax should be earmarked to provide funds for school districts." In a supplemental resolution expressing their concern over escalating property taxes, members asked the Illinois Agricultural association to demand that "any increase needed to provide schools with funds snail come from the state income tax rather than from real estate tax." Calling attention to growing damage to crops and property by vandalism and trespassing, members approved a resolution asking the IAA to seek stiffer penalties on guilty offenders. In his report as president, Luerssen drew a parallel on space technological success with the way modern* technology has changed farming practices. He said one new tool. farmers can use is the ricultural Area act, which ill help protect farmland. Another is to have a farming operation classified as "intensive use." New tools include marketing advice, the new farmland assessment law slowing the increase in real estate taxes and contact with legislators with a pen or voice. Completing his .fifth year as president, Luerssen said . farmers have made strides in protecting farmland with soil conserving practices but he urged them to step up the use of no-till farming, - especially on land subject to considerable erosion. Larry Harris, manager, reported membership increased slightly during the membership year-from 6,202 to 6,350, as of last Aug. 31.
