The Warriors, coached by Bill Hutchinson and Earl Kyle, scored 23 points in Saturday's meet at Veterans Acres Park to upend defending champion Crystal Lake Central. Senior Wade Cepulis was the individual winner of the event with a time of 16:48.3. When they left Woodstock, they would be ranked seventh in the state. McHenry won over a field of nine schools by placing five runners in the top 10 spots. More importantly, the Warriors avenged their only loss of the year as they W M DELLA SAUNDERS outdistanced Crystal Lake Central 31-42. Then came last Saturday. Running at the Tigers' home course at Veterans Acres Park, McHenry won its first-ever Fox Valley * conference title on a cold windy morning by scoring a mere 23 points. The Warriors had won a conference title in 1975 under Hutchinson's guidance, but at that timeO they were part of the Norf \ thwest Suburban Crystal Lake Central, the defending champion, was second with 41 points with the rest of the schools trailing far behind Jacobs finished third in the race with 73 points and was folowed by Wodstock, fourth with 137; Cary Grove, fifth with 141, Crystal Lake South, sixth with 150; Dundee, seventh with 156; and Crown, eighth with 202 The Warriors and the Tigers were expected to be the heavy favorites in the meet, and at the finish the top seven runners were all wearing orange. After finishing third in the county meet, senior Wade Cepulis of McHenry led the pack with a first place time of 16 minutes, 48 and three- tenths seconds. "Wade ran just a great race," said Hutchinson. "We were trying to avoid having Central finish one, two, three and our kids came through real well." Pat McDaniel and Jim Lane of Central finished second and third with times of 16:55 and 16:57, respec tively, but a host of Warriors followed behind Chris Creutz finished fourth in 17:03 and was followed by teammates Gordy Bourey, fifth in 17:08, Brian Wright, sixth in 17:22; and Steve Carby, seventh in 17:25. The victory entitles McHenry to 21 conference meet points to be added to its 12 dual meet points that were parned during the year for a first place total of 33 points. Central, by finishing second in the conference meet, earned 18 conference meet points to add to its 14 dual meet points for a second place total of 32 points. Rounding out the rest of the total points, Jacobs was third with 25, Cary Grove, fourth with 17; Woodstock, fifth with 14; Crystal Lake South, sixth with 10; Dundee, seventh with 9; and Crown, eighth with 0. In the girls race, Wood­ stock's Erika Sommers captured first place with a time of 13:49.5, while McHenry's Delia Saunders finished second with a 14:04 clocking. Other Warrior finishers were Mary Bazan, sixth in 14:23; Pam Bradley, 16th in 14:50; Tiffany Hinger, 26th in 15 48; Sue Pender, 34th in 16:43; Deb Smith, 43rd in 16:46; and Amy Cepulis, 45th in 17:23. Woodstock won the con­ ference championship with 35 total points followed by Crystal Lake South with 28 points and McHenry, finishing third with 25 points. Completing the scoring, Crown finished fourth with 22 points; Crystal Lake Central was fifth with 13; Jacobs, sixth with 10; Cary Grove, seventh with 4; and Dundee finished eighth with 0. The Warriors will look to further success on Saturday, Oct. 31 when they host the District meet at West Campus McHenry's stiffest competition is expected to come from Hoffman Estates, currently ranked 11th in the state. Besides McHenry, Cary Grove will be the only Fox Valley school competing*1 The top four teams from the District meet in addition to the top five individuals of non-qualifying teams will advance to Sectionals on Nov. 7. On a cold, windy day the Tigers made their Homecoming a success behind the running of Joe Malone and the passing of Joe Graves. Taking the opening kick off on their own 42, the Tigers marched down the field in 11 plays with Malone scoring from two yards out at 7:02 in the period. The PAT was good and Central led 7-0. Late in the period following an exchange of punts, the Warriors took over on the Tiger 41 Quarterback Doug Mullen connected with Dennis Shaver which put the ball on the 22. Clayton Lane then broke through the Tiger line and scampered to the nine. Two plays later Mullen again connected with Shaver this time for an eight-yard scoring strike The PAT was no good and the first quarter ended with McHenry trailing 7-6. The second period was all Crvstal Lake. With the wind to their back*, the Tigers took to the airways and found nothing but success. A Graves to Stovall pass went for 33 yards and put the ball on the Warrior 31. Four plays later, Malone scored the second of his four touchdowns, this one from three yards out The point after ws good and with 7:28 remaining until the half. Central led 14-6. Following the kickoff, the Warriors were unable to generate any offense and were forced to punt on fourth down. On the first play for the Tigers, Graves con- nected'with Hill for a 35-yard score and Central increased its lead to 21-6 after the point after. On the first play after the kick off, Mladen Rudman ran a reverse for the Warriors and raced 65 yards before being tackled from behind on the Tiger 19. The Warriors fumbled on the next play, however, and the Tigers recovered to stave off the scoring threat. Graves then led his team to one more score before intermission. Another pass to Hill put the ball on the Warrior 38. After another first down on the 28, Graves on a keeper scrambled to the 9. Two plays later and with only 12 seconds left in the half, Malone went over the goal line from two yard out. The PAT was again good, and at the end of the first half, Central led 28-6. After an exchange of punts, the Tigers took over on the Warrior 40 early in the third period. Three pass plays put the ball on the 10. From there, the Warriors dug in and held forcing a field goal attempt. But on the kick, the Warriors were guilty of roughing the kicker, giving new life to the Tigers on the 2-yard line. Malone then went in again for his fourth touchdown of the afternoon and after the extra point, Central led 35-6. The Warriors then took to the air on their next possession. Two straight passes from Mullen to Shaver put the ball on the Tiger 17. Three plays later Mullen raced around end from nine yards out for the score Rudman's extra point kick was good and near the end of the third period, McHenry trailed 35-13. The Tigers scored their final touchdown of the af­ ternoon seconds later when Graves connected with Stovall for 23 yards and a score. Their fifth PAT was good and Central led 42-13. The Warriors needed only two plays to score following the kick off. Mullen hit Shaver with a 58-yard bomb to the Tiger 19, then Rud­ man on the reverse ran for the score. The PAT failed and McHenry trailed 42-19. Late in the game, a Mike Love to Tom Lynk pass was good for a first down on the Tiger 29. Rudman then scored his second touchdown of the game and with MuSfen kicking the extra point, the scoring ended at 42-26. Central outgained McHenry in total yards 429 to 344 in the high scoring affair. The Tigers rushed for 216 yards and had another 213 through the air, while the Warriors rushed for 191 yards and had 153 yards passing. Saturday, the Warriors (4> 3, 2-3 FVC) will host Jacobs (4-3, 3-2 FVC). The GoM Eagles are coming off a 14 win over Woodstock. Plaindealer Marian Rips Marengo 27-0 Marian Central tuned up for this weekend's crucial battle with Hononegah as the Hurricanes breezed past winless Marengo 27-0 last Saturday. With the victory, Marian improved its record to 4-0 in the SHARK conference and 6-1 overall. It was also the Hurricanes fifth straight win. Marian could clinch the SHARK title this Saturday with a victory over second place Hononegah, which is scheduled to visit for a 2:00 p.m. match The defending champion Indians, 3-1 in the league and 4-3 overall, are coming off a 27-14 win over Johnsburg Marengo took the opening kickoff at the 18-yard line and lost yardage after three consecutive runs to Ed Markison. Robert Stuntz punted on fourth down, but a strong wind pushed the ball back to the Indian 10-yard line where Marian took over. On the first play, Hurricane quarterback Don Rickert carried to the six- yard line, and halfback Phil Brown followed with a plunge to the one Rickert then called his own number and scored on the following play. Scott Spengel's extra point kick was good and Marian led 7-0 with 8:22 left in the first quarter. Marengo then took the kickoff at its own 19-yard line and appeared to duplicate their first misfortune. Markison again ran the ball three con­ secutive times only to lose yardage and again Stuntz was forced to kick on fourth down. This time, however, Stuntz gained yardage on the kick, but the ball nevertheless ended up deep in Marengo's territory where it was batted around until Marian's Bob Webb fell on it at the 21-yard line. On the next play, Tom Pappas broke through the Marengo line for a 21-yard score with 5:07 left in the quarter. Spengel's kick was again perfect and Marian led 14-0. Still unable to move the ball, Marengo fumble on its next possession and Marian took over on its own 40-yard line. This time, however, the Hurricanes were unable to move the ball themselves are were forced to kick it away. Marian made the score 20- 0 in the third quarter when Rickert again scored on a one-yard run. The point after failed on this occasion, however. Near the end of the third quarter, Brown scored the final Hurricane touchdown on a two-yard run. This time Spengel's kick was true and Marian wrapped up its 27-0 win.
