IK TDHEK 2«. 1981 Senior tailback Mike Ainsworth rushed for 117 yards on 15 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead Hononegah past Johnsburg 27-14 in a SHARK tonference game Saturday. The victory by the Indians leaves them at 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the SHARK, a game behind leader Marian Central. Hononegah will be at Marian on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. showdown. The Skyhawks dropped to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the SHARK conference and will host Harvard Saturday at their annual Parents Day game. Ainsworth's performance offset a superb passing performance by Johnsburg's senior quarterback Dan Williams who completed 17 of 31 against a biting wind for 160 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Russ Beck returned the opening kickoff tp the 32- yard line where the Skyhawks took over on their first possession of the game. Behind the running of Pat Rorig and an 11-yard pass from Williams to end Rob Schmidt, Johnsburg picked up a first down on its first series. But the drive stalled as two illegal motion penalties backed up the Skyhawks and on fourth down Schmidt was called on to punt. Punting into the wind, an Indian defensive lineman partially blocked Schmidt's kick and Ainsworth, playing linebacker, scooped up the loose ball and rambled 34 yards for th^Tfcore. Scott Sauberlich, Hononegah's signal callcr, booted the extra point and with 8:37 remaining in the first quarter, the Indians led 7-0. The Skyhawks failed to move the ball on their second possession as Schmidt again punted the ball away on fourth down. Jeff Clemens nearly broke the return for another score, but Schmidt, the last Johnsburg defender made the saving tackle. ) After exchanging punts and a fumble recovery by the Skyhawks' Wayne Brennan, Williams got his offense moving as the second quarter began. passes to Schmidt, a i to Rorig, and a pass interference call against the Indians put the ball on the Hononegah 13-yard line. But four straight carries by Rorig came up short as the Indians' defense rose to the challenge and held on fourth down to take over the ball on their own four yard line. Hornets' Loss Now A Win The McHenry Hornets' 6-0 loss to Winnetka on October 18 has been officially reversed to a 2-0 McHenry victory following a protest filed by McHenry coaches. Winnetka was found to have illegally substituted a player's jersey number prior to the game, and also to have used a lineman away from the line of scrimmage. The Hornets victory changes their record to 5-1 and die point totals for and against now correctly stands at 96-13. liNTJMSQlUiC the professional do-it-yourself carpet cleaning system First Hour of Rental $1.00 per hour . . . f o r •very hour thereafter. Sauberlich had other ideas, however, as he ran with the ball on fourth down only to lose seven yards as John Miedzianowski and Larry Dix brought him down. With a golden opportunity at the Hononagah three yard line, Williams ran Rorig for a yard then called his own number on a keeper for the score. The attempted two- point pass was incomplete and Johnsburg trailed 7-6 at 3:24 remaining in the first half. The Indians managed to keep the ball for only six plays on their next possession when Dave Tansor fumbled and Rorig recovered for the Skyhawks on their own 43-yard line with only 4o seconds remaining. Williams then completed three passes in the eight play drive which ended with a five yard toss to Mike Hurckes for the score. Williams then hit Schmidt with the two-point extra point, and Johnsburg led 14-7 at only 20 seconds to go. The key play of the drive was a 22-yard pass to M.J. An derson on fourth down and 10. The Indians got back into the game on their first possession of the second half. With a first and 10 on the Skyhawk 44-yard line, Ainsworth tok a pitch out on the option play and ran 44 yards for the score. The extra point attempt failed, but at 9:54 remaining in the third, Johnsburg's lead was cut to 14-13. Hononegah took the lead for good on its first possession of the fourth quarter. Following another Schmidt punt, the Indians drove 47 yards in five plays and scored on a 35-yard pass from Sauberlich to Tony Warneke. It was Sauberlichl's fourth and final pass of the afternoon and both of his two com pletions were to his 6*4" tight end. The point after failed, but the Indians led 19-14. With under 10 minutes to go in'the game, Williams was intercepted on his first pass following the kickoff and Hononegah took over on the Skyhawk 31-yard line. With either Ainsworth and Tansor carrying on every down, the Indians sealed the victory as Ainsworth got his third touchdown of the game on a five-yard run with 7:34 remaining. Sauberlich ran for the two-point extra point, and Hononegah wrapped up its 27-14 win. The Indians outgained the Skyhawks 261-238 in total yards with most of that total being on the ground, although Johnsburg held a 13-7 advantage in first downs. Besides Ainsworth who had 117 yards, Tansor finished with 70 yards himself on 15 carries. Schmidt was Williams' favorite target as he hauled in nine passes for 101yards with a long gain of 28 yards. Rorig was second in receiving with three catches for 16 yards and he was also the Skyhawks' leading ground gainer with 48 yards on 19 carries. - Carl Moesche After receiving opening round byes, both the Marian Central and the Johnsburg high school volleyball teams will put their skills on the line Thursday night when they begin Class A District competition in second round action. Marian Central, coached by Mary Stoner, enters the tournament with a 12-7 overall record and is coming off a second place finish at the Harvard tournament this weekend. The Hurricanes lost to eventual champion Rich mond in the first match 2-15, 15-3, and 6-15. "We weren't really warmed up in that first match," said Stoner. "But then we relaxed and played better for the rest of the tournament." Marian then defeated North Boone in straight sets 154, 15-2; and Anally host Harvard lS-JLl,' 15-13 to secure second place. In their last home match of the year, the Hurricanes fell victim to red hot Johnsburg Thursday night. Marian won tie first set 16-14, but Johnsburg won the second , set 15-4 and the deciding third set 15-6. Jean Thompson led Marian in the first set ser ving for eight straight points before Jennifer Johnson •came on to put the game away. In the second set, Thompson served Marian to a quick 4-0 lead. But then Diane Heard served seven straight points for the Skyhawks and Sue Dehn served for the final eight in a row to tie the match at (me set apiece. In the third set of the evening, sophomore Theresa Hauck gave Johnsburg a 8-0 lead before Marian called time out. Dehn kept the momentum going for the Skyhawks with two more points, Cheri Kofler added three more, and despite1 four straight points by Marian's Maggie Monson, Johnsburg would go on to win. "We're not quitters," said first year coach Kathy Bull about her Skyhawks. "We have our moments when we lapse up, but we are a comeback team. We believe in each other." Friday night at John sburg's last regular season match of the year, a crowded gymnasuim saw tjie Skyhawks win their ninth of their last 10 games as they topped Marengo 15-0, 15-12. The first set marked the first time ever that a Johnsburg volleyball team had shut out an opponent and there were many witnessses to the event. "There must have been between 100 to 150 people watching us that night," said Bull. "It's nice to see that many people at a girl's event." The Skyhawks finished the regular season with a 14-7 record and a 5-3 mark in the SHARK which ties them with Marian for second place b e h i n d c h a m p i o n Hononegah.
