Wonder Lake Anne Sowers Bill Buckner On Program It was an exciting night for the Wonder Lake Boys Baseball when Bill Buckner of the Chicago Cubs came to talk at the Awards presentation. He had a lengthy question and answer session, after which I'm sure he had writers cramp from signing so many autographs. He then joined the crowd for coffee and cake in the Woodstock high school cafeteria, where he was surrounded by many of the managers, coaches, and parents who were also in terested in a closer look at the sports figure. He was asked a variety of questions regarding the Cub organization and their new manager, Dallas Greene, pitchers he has faced, tips on batting stance, but the cutest question came from one of the younger spectators who asked what he was going to do on Halloween! He said he didn't think he was going to dress up, but would be at home answering the door when kids came to get candy. SENIOR CITIZEN DINNER The First Baptist church of Wonder Lake will be holding its first free senior citizen dinner Friday, Nov. 13, from 5-8 p.m. in the church building, which is the old firehouse on Wonder Lake road. The menu will include meatloaf, mashed potatoes, vegetables, jello, rolls, coffee or milk. In order to get an idea of how many will be coming, it is asked that you call 728- 1289 to put in your reser vation. FIRST IN SPEECH CONTEST Two of our Wonder Lake students came away with top honors recently when they displayed their talents in a speech contest. Mary Higgins and Doug Maris teamed up in a dramatic duet and took first place. Both Mary and Doug are seniors this year at McHenry West campus. Doug also took a second in a humorous duet with a McHenry resident, Jeff Cook. Congratulations to these fine students. Wonder Lake can be very proud to have such talented young people. GARDENCLUB "Planting To Attract Birds", was the topic chosen by our guest speaker, Mrs. H. Carroll. Her bird nest collection gave us an idea of various birds' habitat and her suggestions of flowers to plant, was invaluable; remembering to keep the feeding stations out of reach df preditors and to feed the birds, like any animal who becomes dependent on your 653-9549 constant and consistent care. A wonderful program, followed by hot coffee - so good on these October "iffy" days - and gooey desserts, due to the efforts of our hostess Louise Nawn. The next meeting will be Nov. 12, at 8 p.m. at Mrs. Doris Lockerbie's, 1012 N. Ridge road, McHenry. Anyone interested in gar dening is cordially invited to attend our meetings. Publicity Chairwoman Mrs. B. Alderson SPAGHETTI DINNER What better way to take a break in the middle of a hectic weekend than by going out to dinner? That's what you can do on Sat., Nov. 7, from 4-8 p.m. in Christ the King hall. The wonder Lake Ski club will be preparing a delicious spaghetti dinner and hope to see a big crowd. They are asking a donation for adults with a reduced rate for these under 12, and free to anyone under four years. Tickets may be purchased from any ski club member or at the door. COMMUNITY BILLBOARD As you drive through the center, be sure to look up at the billboard on the side of the hardware store. It's the first think I look for after stopping at the four-way stop sign, because Bill Sullivan does a good job of informing the community of coming events. SPECIAL DAYS Joe and Pat Sullivan of St. Francis Heights celebrated another year of wedded bliss on Nov. 3. Congratulations! Nov. 7 will find Erin O'Brien, son of Tom and Wallie, blowing out birthday candles on his cake. COMMUNITY EVENTS Nov. 4 - Pack 456 ; 7 p.m. Greenwood school. Nov. 5 & 6 - Parent- Teacher conferences.
