The senior signal-caller had another fine day passing as he completed 14 of 30 passes for 130 yards, but the Hornets defeated the Skyhawks for the second time this season. Johnsburg wil close out its season at Wheaton Christian this Saturday. STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD Harvard Edges Johnsburg 16-12 The Johnsburg Skyhawks can take consolation in the fact that they "could've" beaten the Harvard Hornets last Saturday in their final home game of the season Instead, Johnsburg fell to defeat for the seventh time this year in eight games and the second time this season to Harvard by the score of 16-12. Actually, the Skyhawks' chances for victory were more than a "eould've" as they had several scoring opportunities but couldn't capitalize Three times in the first half Johnsburg moved the ball inside the Hornet 10- vard line, but of those three attempts only one resulted in a score. "We should've beaten Harvard," commented head coach Bob Schmitt. "We jusl didn't have the men in the lines. We only have seven linemen and they have to play both ways." The loss leaves Johnsburg with a final 1-4 mark in the SHARK conference and a 1-7 overall record with one game remaining The Skyhawks will travel to Wheaton Christian this Saturday, November 7 for their final game of the season. Johnsburg took the opening kickoff and moved to the Harvard five-yard line before stalling and giving up the ball. The Hornets jumped out to a 7-0 lead later in the half, but the Skyhawks came right back on a four yard touch down by Pat Rorig to make the score 7-6. In the second quarter. Harvard added another touchdown to make the score 14-6 at intermission In the second half, Johnsburg was in control for most of the 30 minutes. The Skyhawk offense produced six first downs, while the defense yielded but one first down in the second half Johnsburg had control of the ball at its own 30-yard line when quarterback Dan Williams connected to Rob Schmidt for a gain of 15 yards. On the next play, Pete Barroso swept outside for a 23-yard gain and a Skyhawk first down at the Hornet 33- vard line But the drive was halted two plays later when a mix-up in the Skyhawk backfield led to a fumble recovery by the Hornets On Johnsburg's next possession. Williams lobbed a 48-yard pass caught at the shoe strings by Schmidt. The Skyhawks were stalled on their next three plays and on fourth down a Williams to Scott Zalke pass for a 10 yard gain fell one yard short of a first down. Harvard fumbled on the next play and Johnsburg's Mike Dalen recovered at the 29-yard line. On a fourth down play with nine yards to go, Williams scrambled for a 19-yard gain and a first and goal at the nine yard line Three plays later, again on fourth down, Williams under pressure found Schmidt in the end zone for a 12-yard scoring strike. The at tempted two-point con version failed and with 11 minutes remaining in the game, the Skyhawks trailed 14-12. After stopping the Hor nets' offense on their next possession, Johnsburg took over with Williams again going to the airways. The senior signal-caller completed a 15-yard pass to Schmidt and a 22-yarder to Russ Beck, but penalties wiped out the long gainer and on fourth down John sburg was forced to punt the ball away. The Skyhawks had one final chance to score when Zalke caught an 18-yard pass for another first down. But on the next play, Williams was intercepted ending the Skyhawk drive. Harvard moved the ball to the three-yard line, but fumbled there as Dalan got his second recovery of the half. One play later, Williams was sacked in the end zone for a safety to make the final score 16-12. Williams completed 14 of 30 passes for 130 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. "Dan (Williams) has been passing great for us in the last four games," said Sch mitt. "The offensive line has also done a fine job by giving him enough time to throw." "I tell the kids all the time that if they would've started the season playing like this, we could be 5-3 or 6-2," concluded Schmidt. "The defense has been super all along and if we could have won our first two games then we could have set ourselves up a lot better for the season." Joe Kost Plaindealer The Jacobs Golden Eagles defeated the McHenry Warriors 25-7 Saturday to all but end the Warriors' chances for the Fox Valley title this season. The win enabled the Eagles to stay within striking distance of league leading Crystal Lake Central with a 4-2 record, while the Warriors dropped to 2-4 in conference play. Crystal Lake Central remains 5-1 with one game to play. The Warriors completely dominated play in the opening period. After Jacobs kicked off into the McHenry end zone, the Warriors went to work on their first possession. Quarterback Doug Mullen connected with end Dennis Shaver for a 52-yard pass down to the Eagle 18-yard line. Three costly penalties set McHenry back, however, and on fourth down the ball was punted to the Eagle 21- yard line. Jacobs fumbled on its first snap of the contest and McHenry's Dave Kueffner recovered on the 21-yard line. Mullen then went to the airways and was intercepted in the end zone. But after holding the Eagles, the Warriors got the ball back on a punt. Clayton Lane drove the Warriors from their own 41 to the Eagle 18-yard line on four straight carries. Mullen then hit Shaver with a pass to the two-yard line and on first and goal Lane went in for the score. Mullen booted the extra point and McHenry led 7-0 near the end of the first period. Taking the following kick off, The Eagles marched 60 yards to tie the score. At 8:30 remaining in the half, Eberly the Jacobs quarterback, scored on a six-yard run. The extra point kick was good and the half ended with the score tied at seven apiece. The second half was a disaster for McHenry as Jacobs controlled the ball for most of the 30 minutes. The Warrior defense stopped the Eagles' march to the 19-yard line, but the Warriors were forced to punt the ball back four plays later. Jacobs then ran the ball to the McHenry 29 where Jeff Knyal then raced outside for a 29-yard score. The extra point kick was no good, but Jacobs led 13-7 with 2:55 to go in the third period. Jacobs added three points with 11 minutes to go in the game on a 28-yard field goal by Eberly to make the score 16-7. On the following kickoff, Mladen Rudman was tackled at the six, and on the first play from scrimmage Mullen was sacked in the end zone for a safety making the scor^ 18-7. The Eagles drove for their final score late in the fourth quarter and scored on an eight-yard pass from Eberle to Lange to make the final score 25-7. McHenry had one final opportunity to score but an intercepted pass ended the Warriors' threat. McHenry lost the battle in the trenches as 22 carries gained only 23 yards. Jacobs, rrteanwhile rushed for 223 yards on 45 carries. Mullen completed eight of 22 passes for 146 yards while suffering a pair of in terceptions. Shaver was again his favorite target as he hauled in seven of those passes for 142 yards. On Saturday, Nov. 7, McHenry will close out its season when it hosts Crown in a 2:00 p.m. contest. She was also selected captain and most valuable player by her teammates for both her junior and senior years. "She was one of my big players all year," said Warrior coach Pam Shaffer. West led McHenry this season with 120 points on serves and demonstrated 92 percent accuracy at the service line. "She played almost every minute of every game this year," said Shaffer. "She was also one of the smartest players I've coached. We're going to miss her next year." West finished only one point away from being nominated as a unanimous selection.
