• Warriors Win District Meet fScorcftoarl If there's one thing that impresses you about McHenry high school's cross country team, it has to be the depth that it has. The Warriors, ranked seventh in the state in the Class AA Power ratings, won their own District Saturday morning at West Campus although their top runner was hampered by illness. Senior Wade Cepulis, winner in the conference race a week ago and also at the county race a week before that, had been ill prior to the District trace. And although he wasn't 100 percent with his 13th place finish, a couple of his teammates were on hand to pick up the slack. Sophomore Steve Carby led McHenry with a second place overall finish in 15 minutes and 27 seconds. His time sliced off one second from the old course record for a McHenry runner which was set by Mike Burmann in 1977. And right behind Carby was senior Gordy Bourey with a third place time of 15:29. Freshman Chris Creutz was next in for McHenry in ninth place with a time of 15:48, and was followed by sophomore Marty Koleno, 11th in 15:54; and Cepulis who crossed the finish line in 15:56. Also finishing for . the Warriors was sophomore Brian Wright, 15th in 16:03; and junior Ron Ostraiider, 31st in 16:40. The five Warrior finishers accounted for a first place total of 38 points. Hoffman Estates, ranked 11th in the state and defending District champs, gave McHenry its closest competition by finishing second with 52 points. The Hawks also had the event medalist in Pete Brousil who established a new course record with a time of 15:14. Barrington and Stream- wood finished in third and fourth place with 105 and 113 points, respectively to also qualify for the Sectional meet this Saturday at Lake Forest. Conant finished in fifth place with 138 points and was followed by Lake Zurich, sixth with 139; Antioch, seventh with 191; Cary Grove, eighth with 209; Grant, ninth with 222; Round Lake, 10th with 245; and Wauconda, 11th with 246. Johnsburg now boasts an overall record of 16-7, which includes a 11-1 record since October began. The only loss during that span of 12 games came from the Rockets earlier at Richmond. "There was no doubt in my mind that we would beat Richmond," said Johnsburg coach Kathy Bull. "We really wanted to play them bad. They had never seeen us play to our full extent and they just didn't know what to expect." , Johnsburg started out the first game playing very tight and nervous volleyball. Richmond capitalized on the Skyhawks by jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead. The Skyhawks rallied on serves by Norine O'Neill and Theresa Hauck, and spikes by Patti Haag and Diane Heard to even the score. Richmond regained the lead at 9-8, but a serve by Sue Dehn and a Cheri Kofler kill spike gave Johnsburg the momentum they needed. O'Neill added two points and Haag collected the final three as the Skyhawks took the first set 15-10. Johnsburg started out poorly in the second set which allowed Richmond to keep pace. According to Marengo high school principal Don Hedrick, a league official, Hononegah now has the inside track to qualify for its third straight playoff ap pearance. All the Indians have to do is beat the 0-8 Marengo Indians to become the of ficial SHARK playoff representative. Even if Marian beats Harvard on Friday, all the Hurricanes will receive is designation as league co-champion. Marian's only chance to make the playoffs is if it can beat Harvard on Friday night and Hononegah loses to Marengo If both schools win this weekend, each will still be declared SHARK co- champions, but Marian will miss the playoffs. In Saturday's game, Hononegah used four big plays to defeat the Hurricanes. In the first quarter, Tony Warneke caught an 80-yard pass from Scott Sauberlich to make the score 6-0 in favor of the Indians. Marian had a chance to score on its first possession, but when the drive stopped at the Indian 20-yard line, Scott Spengel's attempted field goal was blocked. Marian's defense held Hononegah scoreless until the middle of the third quarter when Mike Ain- sworth broke off a 59-yard scoring run to make it 12-0. Hononegah added two more touchdowns late in the game. Sauberlich again hit Warneke for a score, this time from 47 yards out, and Ainsworth scored the final touchdown on a 14-yard run making the final 24-0. Marian dropped into a tie for first place with Hononagah as each team owns a 4-1 SHARK record. Overall, Marian is 6-2, while Hononegah stands at 5-3. Hauck added two points for the Skyhawks and serves by Haag and a Kofler spike increased the lead to 11-6. Richmond struck back for four straight points to trail by one, but that was all that they were to get. Johnsburg put the finish on the championship with Kofler serving and Haag and O'Neill putting down two spikes apiece for the second straight 15-10 win. "I was pleased with our peformance, but I know that we still didn't play our best," said Bull. "I got on the girls all week and told them that we're not number one, but we're number two. "This team beat us and that gives them the right to be number one. I told the girls that they would have to prove that they were better and that's what they did. "We think that we can win Sectionals," she added. "We've got to get it in our heads to play better at the start and to get good serves. This was the first time in a long time that we missed that many serves." Johnsburg is scheduled to meet the winner of the Kirkland-Hiawatha District on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Should the Skyhawks win, they will play in the championship game on Thursday, Nov. 5.
