U Stars" Represent McHenry The McHenry Stars soccer team has finished their first season as our city's sole representative in the Crystal Lake Soccer Federation's 8-9 year old division. Although our local boys didn't achieve a winning record, they did acquit themselves honorably with excellent team efforts. The McHenry Parks and Recreation Department was invited to enter a team in the Crystal Lake soccer league, and children involved in a the very successful city summer soccer leaue were encouraged to participate. Under the leadership of recreation i director Pete Merkel and coached almost exclusively by interested parents including Ralph Rascon and Ariene and George Mosher, the boys acquired valuable soccer skills. The parents of team members were extremely supportive of the "Stars" and recently sponsored an awards luncheon at a local restaurant. All team members and their dedicated coaches and parents were honored with "Stars" awards and cer tificates of appreciation from the city of McHenry. Future plans being suggested by the parent support group include scheduling of a Chicago Sting soccer clinic somewhere in the area and organization and for mulation of a McHenry- johnsburg soccer federation. Shiela Aieckson M a r i a n C e n t r a l steamrolled its way over Harvard Friday night, wwhipping the Hornets 37-7 in the final game of the season. The Hurricanes, who tied Hononegah for first in the SHARK conference with a 5- l record, limited the Hornets to one fourth quarter touch down and 156 yards total offense. "Every time we got them (the Hurricanes) in the hole, we let them out," said Harvard football coach Mic Stevens. "After we missed that field goal, we just went down." The missed field goal came on the Hornets first possession of the game from 19 yards out. Harvard drove from its own 27-yard line, but the 36-yard attempt was right to the right. With Hurricane quar terback Don Rickert at the helm, Marian was stopped on its first possession. The Hornets regained the ball, but quarterback Lincoln Twedt had the ball knocked loose from his throwing hand*-* ^ and Marian recovered. The Hurricanes conducted a 38-yard drive on the ground, capped by a seven- yard jaunt by senior Tom Pappas with seven left in the opening quarter to give Marian a 7-0 lead. Pappas led all backs in game with 68 yards rushii, w "They played well,')"Said Marian coach Don Penza. "I think that's the best they played all year." "I think what it was, they were really concerned stout Harvard." Marian defeated Harvard 21-12 earlier this Season. "I thought we played a better ball game against tthem the last time," Stevens said after the loss which dropped Harvard to 3- 3 in the SHARK and 4-5 overall. Penzp said Rickert was having "a little bit of an off day," so sophomore Chuck Hartlieb was sent in. "We're pleased with him," Penza said. "It just felt good, so we left him in there." Hartlieb completed six of 12 passes for 99 yards, in cluding an 18-yard touch down pass with 42 seconds left in the game. Stevens said the Hornets didn't pressure Hartlieb, giving him time to throw the ball. In addition to the 99 yards passing, Marian rushed for 142 yards, for a total of 241 yards total of fense. Junior fullback Tim Linhart led the Hornets on the ground with 5? yards while junior Mafrk Gullickson picked up Twedt com pleted two of six passes for 45 yards, including one in terruption.
