It has been announced by President Dorothy Messer that the observance of American Education week will be from Nov. 15 to Nov. 21. American Education week was instituted in 1921 through the combined action of the AiAerican Legion and the National Education association. Since then, the United States of Education and the National Congress of Parents and Teachers have joined in the sponsorship. Through the years, over 50 other national groups have added their services as 'supporting organizations'. The education of our youth paves the way for future leaders of "Democracy In Action". The American Legion believes that education is a necessary prerequisite to the func­ tioning of government. Evelyn Osmon, Unit Education chairman, an­ nounced the 31st edition of "Need A Lift" will soon be ready for distribution. ,JLjs nationally recognized as'dne of the best ' sources of" education aids and op­ portunities in the country. Copies will be placed in all junior and senior high schools and will be given to the guidance counselors. The American Legion auxiliary offers scholarships in three categories; National Presidents scholarship, Trade School scholarships and Opportunity scholar­ ships. Candidates for these scholarships shall be veterans or children of veterans who have served during the eligibility dates for membership in the American Legion. BPW Club To Present Style Show The Harvard Business and Professional Women's club will present a style show entitled "Holiday Elegance- Country Style" Monday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. The show will be held at the Harvard Moose lodge, Route 173 west in Harvard. Thanksgiving is fast ap­ proaching and plans are well underway for FISH baskets for this holiday. , All types of non-perishable canned foods are needed; paper products, soaps, detergents, etc. We will welcome any squash, apples,. or other bounty from your garden, as well as cash, checks, money orders or certificates from local super markets. These are needed for the necessary perishable items, including turkeys and turkey roasts that we try to provide for each family. The baskets will be prepared and delivered on Sunday, Nov. 22, in St. Patrick's church hall, 3500 W. Washington street (en­ trance on the west side of the church). Any donations may be left on the landing to the church hall Saturday, the twenty-first, or anytime before noon mi Sunday. A local pizza place will be having a Christmas canned food drive beginning Nov. 16 through Dec. 13, allowing a generous discount on large and small pizzas to those who bring canned food for under their Christmas tree. The food collected will be given to FISH for distribution to the needy of our area. We still have been unable to fill requests for a full size box spring, dressers (any size or condition), two stoves, a 30-inch electric and one gas range; living room chair and a baby crib. FISH has a great need for drivers; people willing to sign Up for one day a month to take folks to a doctor, dentist or other ap­ pointment.
