The Warriors, gunning for their second straight win ning season, couldn't stop the first period onslaught by the Vikings and as a result finished 2-5 in the Fox Valley conference and 4-5 overall. Viking tailback Bob Grant scored three touchdowns in the first period that all but put the game out of reach After the Warriors took the opening kickoff back to their own 28, quarterback Doug Mullen was intercepted on the second play from scrimmage on the 40. Grant raced for a 21-yard score minutes later and after a sucessful pass conversion. Crown led 8-0 at 7:28 in the period. After getting the hall back following a short McHenry punt. Grant scored his second touchdown of the quarter on a 15-yard run. The extra point kick was good and with 2:47 left in the first period. Crown led 15-0. As the first quarter came to a close. Grant scored his tlyrd touchdown of the game, again on a 21-yard run. and after the kick was again successful. Crown had extended its lead to 22-0. Neither team scored in the second quarter, but in the third quarter McHenry had the first opportunity to put some points on the board. Following an exchange of punts. Warrior linebacker Curt Rehberg intercepted a pass and returned it to the Crown 30-yard line. Clayton Lane then carried the ball to the 16 in two carries before disaster struck. Defensive back Tim Quinn picked off a Doug Mullen pass and raced 97 yards for the final Viking score and at the same time established a new conference record for the longest interception return. The extra point kick was again good and Crown concluded its scoring with its twenty-ninth point near the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Vikings attempted a fake punt which was unsuccessful giving the Warriors the ball on the 43. Lane brought the ball to the 14 on three carries, then Mullen scrambled out of the pocket for a first and goal on the three-yard line. Lane then bulled his way over for the touchdown and a Mullen to Dennis Deja pass gave the Warriors their final points of the season. Late in the period, McHenry drove to the five- yard line, but then fumbled the ball .away and the Vikings ran out the clock The season had been a disappointment for the Warriors, especially since at one time or another 13 players were out with' in juries. McHenry had only five starters healthy for the last three games of the season, , of which the Warriors lost all three.' ' Seniors that played their last game for McHenry included Mullen, Deja, Tom Wagner. Mike Connor, Tony LaGray, Bob Whalen, Scott Schmitt, Tim Barry, Don Jourdan, Curt Rehberg. Dean Parisi, Kelly Gartiier, Tom Burrows, Dave Kueffner, Pete Hendrickson, Dan Clark, Tom Lynk, Gary Schneberger, and Bryan Nobbe, who served as manager after he was in jured earlier this year. Johnsburg Wins Finale 12-8 By Joe Kost The Johnsburg Skyhawks ended their season on a positive note as they rallied to beat the Wheaton Christian Warriors 12-8 Saturday afternoon at Wheaton. Johnsburg quarterback Dan Williams again made the big plays in the win. The. senior signal-caller com pleted just nine of 23 passes, but they went for 168 yards and two touchdowns The Skyhawks fell behind in the first quarter when the Warriors scored on a 65-yard run on a reverse The extra point attempt failed, but Wheaton led 6-0 Johnsburg moved its first possession of the game to the five-yard line, but on four plays couldn't push the ball over the goal line Neither team mounted much of a threat for the remainder of the first half, and at intermission, the 6-0 lead stood up. In the third quarter, Williams brought the Skyhawks back into the game by tossing a 20-yard touchdown pass to senior end Rob Schmidt.'. The extra point-attempt failed and the score was knotted at 6-6. In the fourth quarter, • it was again the combination of Williams to Schmidt that led to the Skyhawk win. Sch midt hauled in his second touchdown reception of the afternoon, this one from 42 yards out and Johnsburg had all the points it would need Wheaton scored its final points of the contest late in the fourth quarter Schmidt took a safety in the end zone on an attempted punt. That made the final score 12-8. "We gave them the safety, said Johnsburg coach Bob Schmitt. "We had intercepted their drive and we were forced to punt from our end zone with only six or seven yards to go. "I told RobTSchmidt) to take the safety if he thought that he couldn't get a good punt off rather than have them block the kick for a touchdown There were only 20 seconds left anyway," he said Besides the passing of Williams, Johns burg's of fense also got a boost from halfback Pat Rorig who had 122 yards rushing and also completed a pass himself for 35 yards. The Skyhawks totaled 373 yards and had 12 first downs in the contest "We played very sluggish in the first half offensively," added Schmitt. "The defense was acceptable. In the third quarter we played better and in the fourth quarter we dominated play." Johnsburg finished 1-4 in the SHARK conference and had an overall mark of 2-7.
