Skyhawk Spikers Eliminated Conclude Best-Ever Season WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER II, 1*81 The Johnsburg volleyball team had its stellar season come to a close Saturday night as it lost to powerful Immaculate Conception 15-3, 15-2 at the Lisle Super- sectional. After winning 13 of their last 14 matches, the Skyhawks never got their offense going against the Knights and finished with a record of 18-8. Immaculate Conception, now 34-4 overall, will ad vance to state competition this week. The Knights were state runner-up last season. Senior Patti Haag gave Johnsburg its only lead of the evening as she served for two quick points at the beginning of the first set. But Immaculate Con ception rallied to score points in bunches between service changes to steadily pull away. Only the spiking of senior Cheri Kofler slowed down the Knights' momentum as she repeatedly gave the servive back to the Skyhawks with kill spikes. After Immaculate Con ception had built up a 14-2 lead, senior Sue Dehn, the Skyhawks number one setter, connected on a spike and then served for the final Johnsburg point. The Knights then took over on a spike and wrapped up the first set moments later. In the second set, Im maculate Conception served first and took a 3-0 lead before Haag got two points back for Johnsburg. . The Knights came back with one, then two points, thai began a string of eight straight points to take a commanding 13-2 lead. The Skyhawks got the serve back one final time on a shot by Haag. But after failing to score, the Knights regained service and won the match with two straight points. To reach Supersectionals, Johnsburg had won the Marian Central Sectional last Thursday by defeating Earlville in the finale 15-9 and 157. _ The Red Raiders entered the Sectional competition with a 19-2 record and eliminated Marian Central in the first round to reach the finals. Johnsburg defeated Paw Paw in their first Sectional match to reach the finals. The Skyhawks struck quickly in the first set as sophomore Theresa Hauck and seniors Patti Haag and Diane Heard combined to serve for seven unanswered points. Earlville then scored three points, and after John- sburg's Sue Dehn served for two, the Red Raiders came back with five more to knot the score at nine apiece. Hauck got the service back to the Skyhawks with a kill spike, and then took matters into her own hands by ser ving the set's final six points for the win. Heard added the finishing touch by spiking for the fifteenth point. Hauck again gave John sburg the lead in the second set as Haag and Dehn spikes contributed to a 3-0 lead. Earlville managed one point before Haag tallied eight straight points to give the Skyhawks a com manding 11-1 lead. The Red Raiders then took a time out and the momentum shifted. Heard accounted for two more Johnsburg points, but Earlville chipped away to trail by 14-7. Dehn then ended the season for the Red Raiders by serving for the final two points, aided by a Cheri Kofler spike to win 15-7. Under the guidance of first-year coach Kathy Bull, Johnsburg accumulated the most wins in a season and also advanced further into the playoffs than it ever had done before during the five- year existance of the school. The Skyhawks also won the Zion-Benton Tournament in October and during that month had an incredible record of 11-1. Their only loss during that span was at Richmond. But in the championship game in their own District, the Skyhawks avenged that loss by beating the Rockets and earning the right to advance to Sectionals. Carl Moesche Swim Team Loses McHenry high school's swim team dropped its final regular lason meet of the year Tuesday night as Elgin Laridn scored a 105-63 victory at West Campus. The Warriors did, however, establish three new varsity records with Terri Blume setting two of them. The iunior now holds both the 50 yard and the 100 yard freestyle records with times of 27.96 and 1:00.66, respectively. Monique Betancourt broke the old record in the 100 yard breaststroke by nearly three seconds and now holds the school record with a 1:21.37 clocking. Coach Mike Shanahan's team will be off until the IHSA District competition begins on Saturday, Nov. 14. Since the two Class system began six years ago, Marian Central will be the only school to have gone to state in Class A for five of those years. The Hurricanes also have had to endure injuries that slowed them down this season. Chapman was hurt earlier and Dave Zabielski has been on crutches.
