Miss Grimes recently gave this nation a boost when she co-hosted, along with Jerry Orbach, Alpha Reper tory Television Service's (ARTS) "Man and Woman" theme week. ARTS is a night ly cable service devoted total ly to the performing and visual arts. Tammy Grimes applauds cultural programming "I think that this [ARTS] is a new beginning of using the television medium," Miss Grimes said. "To have chosen the arts is wonderful because TV is the most powerful medium in the world and pro grams that have to do with culture are so important, par ticularly for young people," the actress explained. "The people that are really talented, the greats, must thrive. They carry on through history. The more the arts can be exposed to a nation the healthier the nation is." Yearning "My feeling is that there are thousands of people who are yearning for this kind of pro gramming," Grimes com mented. "Audiences are very intelligent; they are drawn to something that is beautiful because it does affect their "42nd Street's" Tammy Grimes speaks out on the ARTS. lives, whether it be beautiful music or a 6,000-year-old piece of Chinese pottery ... I think ARTS is going to be something important." Each week ARTS program ming features a guest host with performances and pro files wrapped around a theme. The ARTS format repeats an entire evening's programming at least once during the same week and several times throughout the year. It was appropriate that Miss Grimes co-hosted ARTS theme week because among the programs was an hour- long documentary on women artists of the world. She won the Tony award for both best dramatic actress in Noel Coward's "Private Lives" and best musical actress for "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." She currently stars with Or bach on Broadway in the hit musical "42nd Street." TV COMPULOO MKVICtS. Pfpfofn Vidc.o by James Smethurst When the Netherlands Dance Theatre gave its American premiere performance of Jiri Kylian's "Overgrown Path" at New York's Metropolitan Opera House last July, many ballet lovers were skeptical whether the 35 member company could do justice to the grand style and huge scale of the Met. Their fears were soon put to rest. The house was sold out for the entire engagement, and the perfor mance of the dancers was ac claimed both for its expressive and technical brilliance. Clive Barnes of the New York Post call ed Kylian "a master." Devotees of the dance will get a rare chance to look into the crea tion of this exciting event when Alpha Repertory Television Service (ARTS) presents "The Creation of Ballet" on November 9,10 and 13, chronicling the pro gress of "Overgrown Path" from rehearsal to world premiere. Woody Alien "I don't care what anybody says. It's still a great city," says Woody Allen to Diane Keaton in his film "Manhattan," as they sit by the banks of the East River and watch the sun come up to the background of George Ger shwin's "Rhapsody in Blue." The movie isn't bad either. Filmed in black and white and starring Allen, Keaton and Mariel Hemingway, "Manhattan" is the story of a successful writer of television comedy who is involved with two women. One of them is his own age and is being pursued by his best friend who is married; the other is a lV-year-old high school student. In this complex situation he must somehow main tain his integrity, morally and emotionally. The film features a number of outstanding perfor mances, particularly Keaton's portrayal of a talented but in secure and confused journalist. "Manhattan" will premiere on Cinemex Monday, November 9. * Boxing fans will get a chance to see one of the best fighters fighting today in any weight class when HBO presents live cover age of the meeting between champion Wilfred Benitez and the number one challenger for the WBC Super Welterweight title on November 14. Benitez, the youngest fighted ever to hold three titles, gave Sugar Ray Leonard a tremendous battle in Leonard's first bout for the Welterweight crown. Though Benitez lost to Leonard, he pro bably hit Leonard more than any of Leonard's opponents since. Benitez' talents have improved since then to the extent that many rate him as even better than Leonard. Carlos Santos, from Puerto Rico, is the WBC's top ranked contender for Benitez' title. He is undefeated in 21 fights with 14 KO's. • "I try to keep the gap between kids' music and adults' music as small as possible," explained George James, the music direc tor of Nickelodeon's "Pmwheel," an entertainment show for pre school kids. "It doesn't take years of schooling to comprehend It's an emotional communication." In other words, "If it's a good piece of music anyone can enjoy it." James, who has done every thing from trumpet playing and fronting a nightclub act to audio engineering (all experiences he uses in his current work), has a definite view about the nature of his job as the chief songwriter for "Pinwheel." "A song's purpose is not always comprehensible in terms of its lyrics. That's why a song is a special thing. You get a feeling from it regardless of its words." Or to simplify, "The closer the rhythm and muse are in intent, the more complete the emotional experience of the child." TV COMMJLOe MKVICtS. IMC
