ROCK ON by EthKe Ann Vara ALBUMS REVIEWS The Klnk6 Give the People What They Want (Arista) For a band thafs been giving the people what they want for 17 years, these guys don't get much respect. Why, where do you think the Pretenders stole everything they know? The Kinks latest LP is spotty, but contains potential airplay an thems in "Better Things," "Around the Dial" and the delectably self-parodying "Destroyer." Meat Loaf Meat Loaf Dead Ringer (Epic) One can't really review Meat Loaf. He isn't good, bad or indifferent--Meat Loaf just is. On this long-awaited follow-up to Bat Out of Hell, he thwarts the American Dream with the help of collaborator Jim Stein- man (Bad For Good), producer Jimmy lovine (Tom Petty), pian ist Roy Bittan (Bruce Spring steen) and singers Teddy Neeley ("Jesus Christ, Superstar") and Cher (!?!). Nils Lofgren Night Fades A way (Backstreet) For someone that comes out of Neil Young's camp, Lofgren sounds more like Todd Rundgren with a pinch of Louden Wainwright tossed in. He plays an excellent guitar, has a pleasing--if under whelming--voice and writes good material. Lofgren ignites few sparks, but makes for en joyable listening. The Kings Amazon Beach (Elektra) The young Canadian band was one of the most pro mising debut acts of last year; "Switchin* to Glide" was a great radio song. Their second LP is less vivacious and more polish ed--a bad trade. The only youthful exhuberance left here is on the juvenile album cover designed by John Kosh, who should know better. Sniff 'n' the Tears Love Ac tion (MCA) An extremely ac complished and commercial band that can't seem to get anywhere. Their third album features a new label and two new guitarists but the sound --under the strong guidance of painter Paul Roberts--is un changed. Gutsier than last year's The Game's Up, but still not as sharp as their first LP on Atlantic. TheTub66 T.R.A.S.H. (A&M) Before they became a top-40 hit on Capitol, the Tubes had a bunch of underground classics (read: "didn't sell") with A&M. This is a collection of alternate takes and live performances of such memorabilia as "Don't Touch Me There" and "What Do You Want From Life," sub titled Tubes Parities ^nd Smash Hits. UPDATE The record companies unleash their big guns for the Christmas gift-giving season. Expect new live albums from Pink Floyd and Rush, "best of collections from Queen, Blon- die and the Doobie Brothers, and new releases from the BeeGees, AC/DC, the Cars and Earth, Wind and Fire.
