DEER XING | A Wildlife Calendar lasts from October through December, and at this time bucks are concentrating on their primary goal-mating with six to eight does. The doe comes into heat for 24- hour periods at 28-day in­ tervals. And while the buck is running the doe, he will be in a highly excited state. Normally white-tailed deer feed on leaves, twigs, seeds, and grasses. But in this area they have adapted well to living near humans which m§ans they have learned to h»ve corn and beans. As these ..crops are harvested, the deer are routed from their normal teiritories, and they will often be on the move at dawn and dusk-their habitually feeding time. Since rutting and har­ vesting are natural and necessary activities that cannot be stopped, we should take extra precautions while driving. Be more alert for deer at the edge of the road and drive more slowly. Favorite road crossing may be near wooded areas, creeks, and drainage systems. Deer will often travel in groups of two or three, so if one crosses safely in front of your car, you should ex­ pect more to follow. If the deer sees you, don't assume that he will stop or change direction. If the deer is November is a time when normal deer patterns are disturbed. To reduce the number of auto collisions with deer, the McHenry County Con­ servation diatrict has in­ stalled deer reflector systems on some state roads heavily trafficked by deer. These mirrors reflect headlights to alert deer to onconrjing vehicles before they enter the roadway. Present systems are located on Route 23 north of river road and on Route 14 south of Harvard. The white-tailed deer, our newly chosen state animal, is found in every county in the state. Illinois deer are generally well fed, healthy and beautiful animals. If we are particulary careful this month and heed deer- warning signs, we may avoid costly damage (ap­ proximately 3340 per deer collision) and needleas loss of wildlife. Although deer usually do not fare well when struck by a car, some do survive. For example, the MCCD Wildlife Rehabilitation project has treated an injured doe who delivered twin fawns during her recovery period-all three were later released.
