The many friends of An thony Schneider of McHenry will have the pleasure of hearing him over the air from Station KFLV at Rock- ford. Anthony, who is studying music at the state Normal school at DeKalb, will sing a collection of popular songs including "When the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day". He was accompanied by an orchestra and also by^ a pianist, Ralph Wyman, who is also a student at DeKalb. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 19, 1942). Our McHenry county rural schools have been assigned and have accepted as an obligation during the present crisis, the responsibility for developing an informed public opinion in our neigh borhoods. To help the schools in this work, the Northern Illinois State Teachers college at DeKalb is giving short courses in setting up techniques by means of which the rural school may function as a discussion center during the period of emergency. Friends here will be in terested to learn of the marriage of Miss lone Gates, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar E. Gates of River Grove, 111., and Mr. Kenneth Boley, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Boley, of the city. The ceremony occurred Feb. 8 in Washington, D.C. Mr. Boley is employed as a technician in the Naval Ordinance Laboratory in Washington. An undetermined amount of money was taken from the Moose lodge in the second break-in of the last two weeks. Authorities say that from appearances, it seemed the burglars had started to remove a quantity of liquor but decided for some reason to leave with only the money. More than 50 McHenry folks were in the audience of about 1,200 persons who witnessed the annual county music festival in Crystal Lake. Eighty young people from the community took part in the program, which climaxed two days of intense rehearsals and several weeks of preparation in the individual high schools. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 1, 1972). Tuesday was a very special day for four McHenry youngsters. It was their birthday. This would not be particularly noteworthy except for the fact that although they reached the age of 8, they were celebrating their second birthday anniversary. These young people are the only four grade school students in McHenry who were Leap year children. They are Thomas McMahon, son of Dr. and Mrs Mrs. James McMahon, Susan Bolger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bolger, and Scott Larsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Larsen, all students at Montini primary school; also Gary Pierce, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Pierce, a second grader at Edgebrook. A victory as decisive as the previous two defeats assured the county that a permanent campus for McHenry County college district will be provided. The voting in 13 polling precincts brought out 7,747 persons favorable to the propostion and 2,415 opposed for a total of 10,162. (By Erin Hynes, Ex t e n s i o n A d v i s e r , Agriculture, McHenry County). You may be alarmed to see your plants gradually disappear under this win ter's unending snow supply. In many cases, however, it may be this snow which sees your shrubs and small trees through to spring. A good snow cover has many benefits. Snow's in sulating ability will protect the roots and branches of many plants which our eye- openingly cold weather might otherwise damage or kill. If the snow builds up high enough it can surround whole plants and protect them from the drying effects of winter winds and sun. Snow cover can also prevent deep frost penetration which freezes sewer lines. Finally, melting snow builds up the sub surface water supply essential for crop production during the summer months. (For those of you in doubt, there is such a thing as summer.) Snow does have its negative side, however. Heavy, wet snow and freezing rain often break the weighed-down branches on which they rest. Foundation plantings can suffer damage when avalanches rumble off your roof onto them. Melting snow that runs off the roof and refreezes on the plants below can also injure tissue and cause breakage. When feasible, you can protect foundation plantings with structures of saw horses and planks, and plant future shrubs in areas when snow slides are less com mon. Lions Offer Summer Camp For Blind, Deaf Summer is a time of growth. The restrictions of winter are set aside, the freedom of sunshine is there to be en joyed. Both enjoyment and growth are part of a special program for a special group of children: Camp Lions, a free summer camp offered by the Illinois Lions Clubs through the Lions of Illinois Foundation for Illinois children who are blind, deaf, or severely visually or hearing impaired. Summer camp is an op portunity for children to make friends, increase in dependence, improve self images, and grow mentally as well as physically. Because of the Lions, blind and deaf children do not have to stay home while their sighted and hearing playmates enjoy the sum mer. Camp Lions hosts about 400 children each summer at two locations: Camp Lions Ravenswood on Hastings Lake. Lake Villa, in the northern part of the state, and Camp Lions Touch of Nature near Carbondale in southern Illinois. There will be two sessions at Ravenswood this sum mer, July 18 to July .30 and 1 _Scott cj r j . ^ \ o l a / 2 #• -» T\ • A T T O R N E A T L A W ABLE TO HELP YOU WITH- W i l l s & F s t a t e s P e r s o n a l l n | u ' y R e a l E s t a t e B u s i n e s s Z o n i n g W o r k e r s C o m p A n d O t h e r P r o b l e m s V o u M a y N o v o I n i t i a l ' H o u r C o n s u l t a t i o n S 2 j 4 3 0 6 C r y s t a l L a k e R d M t H e n r y W h i s p e r i n g P o i n t C o r t e r ( 8 1 5 : 3 4 4 - 1 6 3 0 ALEXANDER LUMBER CO. Scholarship Made Possible By Recycling A recycling drive will be held Saturday, Feb. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of McHenry Market Place (West Route 120). Items which can be brought to the drive include newspapers securely tied, glass containers rinsed and all metal removed^ steelC'tin") cans washed and flattened; used motor oil in plastic or metal con tainers, and aluminum scrap of all kinds. There is also an immediate pay-back for all- aluminum cans brought to the drive. This drive is being sponsored by the McHenry County Defenders, county- wide non-profit organization which has been "recycling" for more than 10 years. Funds derived from these drives support numerous local activities, including a $500 scholarship awarded annually to an En vironmental Science student from McHenry county (college junior, senior or g r a d u a t e s t u d e n t ) ; educational programs on such topics as land use, urban growth, landfills, gravel mining, etc.; gathering information to enable elected officials to make environmentally-wise decisions; and maintaining an environmental library at the Defenders office (65 North Williams street, Crystal Lake) which is open M o n d a y , W e d n e s d a y , Saturday from 9:30 to 3:00.
