The Illinois Domestic Violence Act, (IDVA), recognizes the seriousness of domestic violence and establishes legal rights for someone who has been abused at home. Upon signing the bill into law, Governor James R. Thompson called it "ex­ traordinary legislation." He said, "It means that those abused by the hands of those that they live with now have a system of legal rights to turn to." This act clarifies the authority of law en­ forcement officers, requires that protection and assistance be offered to the victims, specifies legal remedies and provides a means for compiling statistics on the prevalence of domestic violence. "With its protections for victims, the IDVA is much more than a law on the books. It is a lifesaver in homes across Illinois," said Barbara Shaw, executive director of the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence. "The safety and protection abused persons can expect will be felt im­ mediately as a result of the training law enforcement personnel are receiving," she added. The Coalition, working under a grant from the Illinois Department of Public Aid, is cooperating with the Illinois Department of Law Enforcement, Illinois Sheriffs association, the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, Illinois Law en­ forcement Training board, and other law enforcement in educating local officers around the state. The Coalition is also working with state's at­ torneys, judges and probation officers regarding their responsibilities under IDVA. Educational materials for victims are being assembled , and a statewide publicity cam­ paign to make citisens aware of their rights under the new law is already under way. The new legal remedy involved, called an Order of Protection, is quick and easy to obtain. It is designed to protect victims from con­ tinued abuse by family or household ntertibers. Through an Order of Protection, a civil or criminal court can order the violent party to stop the abuse and temporarily bar them from the home. The court can also order the abuser to pay support, medical costs and legal expenses and require at­ tendance at counseling. Any person may initiate proceedings on behalf of children or elderly persons who are incapacitated by age or illness. According to the IDVA, law enforcement officers now must make a reasonable effort to get the victims to a shelter or medical facility, or back into the home for possessions. They must also inform victims of their legal rights. The Coalition has published a section-by- section summary of the act which explains the effect of each section. V •BMP Suuftcf Chemical Company Family Tree Climbing In McHenry County "Genealogical Research, Using the LDS Branch Library" will be the subject of guest speaker Carol Schifhnan at the March 11 monthly meeting of the M c H e n r y . C o u n t y Genealogical society. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship hall of Grace Lutheran church, Washington street at Tryon, Woodstock. The Latter Day Saints (Mormon) library at Salt Lake City has the greatest genealogical collection in the world. The history of families is intrinsic to the Mormon faith. It is for that reason 4hey are compiling all possible records per­ taining to family and family relationships, regardless of the faith of the individuals on that record. Camera crews are microfilming throughout the world, as well as the nation, records of births, marriages, deaths, wills, probate, land grants, deed, military service, cemetery, parish and census records, to name a few. The Salt Lake City library contains over 1.1 million rolls of microfilm bearing the vital records of over a billion people who have lived and died in 60 countries. The library alsd has 200,000 printed volumes on its shelves. It employs about 700 people, including librarians who speak 40 languages, to assist those doing research in foreign countries. For the benefit of those who do not have access to the actual library at Salt Lake City, there are branch libraries throughout the nation and also in other countries. These libraries have on file the contents of the card catalog of the main library at Salt Lake City, so that these records may be ordered for the researcher at a very nominal charge, to cover the postage. The .two nearest LDS branch libraries' for the McHenry county area are located at Wilmette and Rock|ord. Although Mrs. Schiffman's pointers on the use of the library will be from the standpoint of her affiliation with the Wilmette branch library, the com­ ments will apply to the use of any LDS library. Mrs. Shiffman is an ex­ perienced genealogist, teacher of genealogical subjects and a partner with her husband and son of "Genealogy Unlimited", located in Buffalo Grove. It is through the generous sharing of the library facilities by the LDS church to the general public that hundreds of thousands of genealogical and family history reserachers are able to accomplish their research goals "from their arm­ chairs". Inform Public On Candidates' Night With spirited competition for County board seats in all three districts, the March 16 primary election is unusually significant to McHenry county citizens. Farm Bureau plans a special Candidates night Tuesday evening, March 9, to feature all candidates for County board on both the Republican and Democratic tickets. This 7:30~ p.m. meeting will be held at the Farm Bureau building at Woodstock. It ;is open^to the > pubhir, atKH alb citizens* arST urged to attend because of the importance of knowing more about those who propose to become public servants. / District competition on the Republican ballot is especially spirited. Eight will be nominated. Nine seek berths in District 1, 12 in District 2 and 11 in District 3. Four seek the Republican c o u n t y t r e a s u r e r nomination. Both parties have two candidates for sheriff. following the meeting on MiJroh 1, coffee and refresh­ ments will be served. M Study Tour Openings There are some openings remaining for participants in McHenry County college's European study tour this summer. The tour, which is run in conjunction with a credit class studying classical and modern patterns of European art and culture, will be led by MCC in­ structors Denis Bancroft and Ossie Rometo. The three-week tour will include visits to France, Spain, Italy and Switzerland. The study tour is a chance to do more, on a trip to Europe than just see the sights. Last summer more than 40 participants in a similar MCC tour did everything from hearing lectures in Paris' Louvre museum to visiting a small private art gallery where they talked with a modern Swiss artist. The tour also included a personal lecture tour through the Vatican and Sistine Chapel. Final deadline for payment is April 2. Rometo teaches drawing and painting at the college and specializes in the art and architecture of the Renaissance and Romantic- Neo-Classical masters. He has studied art in Florence at the Academy of Fine Art. B a n c r o f t t e a c h e s photography at the college and has traveled extensively in Europe and Asia. Pianist Dick In Recital Piano music of feach, Chopin, Beethoven, and Ginastera echoed through the auditorium of Crystal Lake Central high school recently as pianist James Dick presented a special recital f(N* McHenry county music students. Community Concerts Association of Crystal Lake arranged the program in conjunction with Dick's recital appearance on the same evening. Students from all parts of the county were brought to Central high school with music teachers from the various schools for the morning of music. Following his per­ formance, students asked questions about the artist's background and education, career highlights, and favorite composers, as well as more practical matters, such as, "How long should you practice every day?"
