Feb. 19,26 & March 5,1982) No. 820076 If you've ignored your fruit trees for the last couple of years and have wondered what, if anything can save them or, maybe you have recently moved into a house and inherited poorly pruned trees, worry not, there's still hope. According to a bulletin from the Illinois State Nurseryman's association, several factors enter into the care of trees to keep them attractive and productive. Particularly, if you are the owner of a fruit tree, it is very important that proper pruning be done in order for the tree to yield a healthy harvest and to be an asset Lq the landscape as well. First, and foremost, the primary purpose of pruning a fruit tree is to improve the quality and size of the fruit, to develop a strong tree that will carry a load of fruit, and to adjust and control the size of the tree (to keep it low enough for easier management). Fruit trees tend to become un manageable, out of shape and produce lots of low quality fruit, if they go un- pruned. It is important to know the right time to prune your fruit tree. Heavy pruning must be kept to the latter portion of the dormant season, preferably from Feb. 1 to April 1 in the northern portion of Illinois. Premature pruning may result in the increase of cold injury to the fruit tree. It is best to wait until late winter or early spring to prune young trees. Light pruning can be done anytime. Although no two trees grow and develop exactly alike, it is essential to know the right pruning habit for each tree. Your local ISNA garden center or nursery can offer assistance here. It is important to remove any dead wood and broken branches from the tree. At the same time check for weak, drooping non productive branches or any branches that touch the ground, and remove them. Remove any diseased branches or diseased parts of branches and at the same time remove any water spouts, those vertical rapidly growing young shoots from the trunk .or scaffold (main) branches. Check for branches that grow into one another or rub against each other and, if possible, remove the least desirable branch. Rod Anderson, president of the Illinois State Nur seryman's association, says the greatest mistake of all is not to do any pruning. Don't be afraid of ruining your tree. Trees have the ability to replace those removed parts. But also remember that replacing a removed branch may take years, so you should have a good reason for making a certain cut. Fawn's mother For a number of years, health professionals have been stressing the im portance of exercise. And the majority of Americans believe that exercise is good for you. But, except for a dedicated minority, the efforts of most people are too irregular and too feeble to bring success. Surprisingly, most people think they are getting enough exercise. There is a tendency to underestimate just how much exercise the body needs in order to keep it in good working order. Only regular, vigorous exercise will maintain or increase muscle strength and en durance. If the muscles you can see lack tone -- if they are weak - - you can be sure that the heart muscle is in the same condition. Once you have reached the point where your body is in good physical condition, you should exercise for 15-30 minutes at least three to five times a week. In order to enhance your muscle tone, you should include exercises such as yoga or calisthenics, for 15-30 minutes at least three times a week. Before you start a physical fitness program, however, you must determine how fit you are Do you often feel faint op have dizzy spells? ft)o' you frequently have pains in your heart and chest? Has your doctor ever told you that you have heart trouble, or is he treating you for high blood pressure? Do you have a bone or joint problem, such as arthritis, that has been aggravated by exercise, or that might be made worse with exercise? Are you more than 35 years old and not accustomed to vigorous exercise? If you have ansered yes to any of these questions, you should have a thorough physical examination, and get your doctor's approval before beginning an exercise program. Even if you an swer no to these questions, it isn't advisable to throw yourself into strenuous exercise. After only a few months of inactivity, sudden bursts of vigorous exercise can result in ankle or kee_ injuries, sore joints, aching muscles - and instant discouragement. The Illinois Department of Public Health is promoting physical fitness as one of the most important factors affecting health. Some of these suggestions may not apply to persons with certain chronic diseases or han dicaps, or to pregnant women. Such persons require special instructions from their physicians. • • • * It is much better, a lot easier and less expensive, to. keep your health than to regain it. • • • • Highway signs, read ing "slow" are put up for your protection whether you obey them or not.
