Box 205*Crystol Lake, Illinois 60014 (815)459-2641 by Ellie Rusin Live animal ex perimentation has always been a touchy subject, because, although no balanced person has wanted to deliberately inflict pain on an animal, research of this nature has been considered necessary to our survival. Today, this is no longer justified, if it ever was. Cell and tissue cultures, mathematical models (using computers), and mechanical models fitted with electronic sensors are but a few of the alternative research methods which are suc cessful replacements for live animal research. In fact, they are often less ex pensive, more accurate, and are certainly more humane. While millions of dogs, cats, monkeys, and many other animal types are cruelly abused, tortured, and killed in often sen selessly repetitious ex periments, the results may not even benefit us, because the human body is not necessarily like that of other animals. Witness the Thalidomide fiasco, in which the drug tested as safe on animals but proved dangerous and deadly to humans. Still, change is difficult. Many researchers are more used to using animals and prefer them; animal dealers make their profits by selling animals to laboratories. We, as taxpayers, are footing the bill, and have a right to determine how research money should be JOHN L. Display Native Crafts What does a city planner do when he isn't busy planning cities? If his name is Robert D. Grossman, he pursues a very special second interest: the arts and crafts of the American In dian, and shares his en thusiasm with others. His program, titled "Native American Crafts", will be the fifth in the popular Creative Living series of the Woodstock Fine Arts association, in the Woodstock Opera House, 10 a.m., Thursday, March 18. Well known for his work as Woodstock's city planner, Grossman has traveled on professional assignments throughout the midwest and southwest for such clients as the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. It was on these travels that he developedlhis love for the Indian's artistic abilities. In a unique multi-media presentation - an Opera House "first" - Grossman will show craftsmen ' preparing their * materials 1 apd. •samples of. ;Navajo weavings, pueblo pottery, basketry and jewelry in various stages of production. Many samples of Indian crafts will also be displayed such as the "black on black" vessels of artist Maria Martinez of San Ildefonso Pueblo. The Opera House Com munity room will house an exhibit of Navajo weavings from New Mexico. Tickets may be purchased at the door or by calling 815- 338-5300. Coffee will be served at 9. Seminar For Secretaries And Bosses A seminar for secretaries and their bosses to learn how to work together more ef fectively will be held at Lakeside center Tuesday, March 16. McHenry County college is offering the seminar "The manager and the secretary" as part of its community service function to serve the business community. The presentation will last from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration can be made by calling MCC at (815) 455- 3700, extension 251. • * * • Progress will come to an end when children agree with the views of their parents.
