So upitil November, these courts #e adjourned. *But reflecting upon these st four months of com- tition, several interesting ories have been written, several games will be ng remembered. It's not _ like any other year £ Here's a capsule look at i>me of the noteworthy events of the 1981-82 Reasons: f } At McHenry, veteran <J)ach Ken Ludwig started the season with only two ijeturning lettermen from tJie 17-9 squad that finished third in the Fox Valley (Conference a year ago. Mike Bauml McHenry {JLike last year, the parriors were not a tall, psical team. But unlike Ifcst year, they were inex­ perienced as their final 3-20 record indicated. McHenry started out its season dropping its first four contests including two in the Sycamore holiday tour­ nament, before managing its first win. In their home opener against FVC foe Jacobs, the Warriors relied on a strong fourth quarter defense and the outside shooting of Mike Bauml in the 53-52 win. The victory was short­ lived, however, as McHenry didn't win again in 1981 and had its overall record drop to 1-8. Iji the last game of the year, even a 30-point effort by Mike Burgdorf couldn't notch one in the win column as the Warriors fell 63-58 to host Wheeling in the Christmas tournament. Crown became McHenry's second victim of the season, as the locals played their best game on the road in early January winning 72-62. Bauml and Burgdorf each tied for scoring honors with 16 points. Four games later, the Warriors won what would be their last game of the year, a 54-51 decision against Cary- Grove. Then the losses snowballed. Jacobs won its rematch game with McHenry which started a nine-game losing streak for the Warriors. Fittingly perhaps, it was the same Golden Eagles that ended the season for the Warriors with a 57-35 win in the first round of the Belvidere regional. Although no player was selected to the All- conference squad, Bauml was McHenry's most con- sistant scorer and finished as the team leader with 225 total points in 21 games for a 10.7 average. He also topped the team in free throw percentage making 33 of 44 for 75 percent, as well as assists with 47. Another junior, Steve Babb, led the team in both offensive and defensive rebounding finishing with a total of 141. Johnsburg operated under a new coach in Ben Beck, and since the team also lacked size, it lived and died with outside shooting. The Skyhawks lost a heart­ breaking season opener to Salem Central 57-56, then continued to flounder losing its next six on the road Tom Pieper Johnsburg Beck won his first game as the Johnsburg coach a week before Christmas as his team knocked off SHARK conference leader Marian Central 56-52 behind Jeff Bartmann's 22 points. The Skyhawks would only win once more in 1981, as their record dropped to 2-10. But they got that lift from surprise starter John Wharton who scored 18 points in a 76-60 victory over Genoa-Kingston in the Hampshire holiday tour­ nament. In 1982, Johnsburg won four of its first six games, then went on a downward skid that ended with a regional loss to conference champion Marengo seven games later. Tom Pieper and Bartmann were one-two in the scoring parade for the Skyhawks and both were selected to the SHARK all-conference squad, Pieper to the first team and Bartmann to the second Although not selected to any post-season awards, Joe Meyers more than held his own playing center at only 6- 2. He was Johnsburg's leading rebounder and third leading scorer. Beck's ended his first year with a 6-19 record. Marian Central opeoed its season with no place to call home, as a weather- damaged roof forced coach Hans Rokus' team to play its holiday tournament at Burlington Central. Undaunted by this aggravation, the Hurricanes went on to win the tour­ nament and six of their first seven games. Marian was then upset at Johnsburg before entering the Hampshire holiday tournament. Behind Scott Truckenbrod's career high 40 points, the Hurricanes defeated Belvidere 92-72 in their opener, but then were crushed 82-36 by Chicago Collins which started a five- game losing streak. Dave Rickert was inserted into the starting lineup in that stretch and slowly Marian regained its opening season form. With their roof now intact, the Hurricanes won seven erf their last 10 games, but were defeated by Marengo in regional semi-finals. The Indians were also the only team to win on Marian's home court all season, as they also won there during the regular season. The Hurricanes won all 10 of their other home games. Truckenbrod won the last SHARK scoring title with a 22.6 scoring average. Eight times the smooth-shooting senior connected for at least 30 points. He was selected to the first team of the AU-SHARK conference squad, and was joined by teammates Mike Sabatka (second team), and Rickert (honorable men­ tion). Marian finished the season with a 14-10 record. After helping the Gators to two regular season victories over the Lady Warriors, Scherman, a unanimous All- Fox Valley conference selection and the league's leading scorer, came back to haunt Pat Wirtz's crew for the third time in thQ opening round of the Class AA regionals Monday night. Scherman poured in 20 points, directed the fast break, and piled up numerous assists as South rolled to a 60-38 victory. The victory improved the Gators' record to 204 overall and set up a 7:00 p.m. showdown with Crystal Lake Central for the regional championship Thursday night. The Tigers, now 14-8, won their regional opener over Woodstock 50-29. (See box insert). Two Fox Valley | teams of Tuesday night are still in the running. The I Woodstock Blue Streaks seem to have the best chance of • the two to advance to the Super-Sectional at N.I.U. next • Tuesday. If they can dispose of host Rockford Guilford, and then take the winner of the Grant-Rockford Boylan \ contest they could probably meet Benet Academy. The »Streaks will have to improve on their free shooting ability [ if they are to advance to DeKalb. J Crystal Lake Central has it a bit tougher, they must get < by St. Charles, and then the winner of the Palatine vs. Elk ! Grove contest. The powerful Gators were just too much for the Pat Writz crew. If you look over the Warrior stats for the season, you can see why they had a difficult time of it this season. Their shooting average was 37 percent, and their free throw average was 54 percent. You don't win many games these days with that poor of a shooting average. Years ago you might have won some games, but in these days of hot shooting and high scoring, you have to do a lot better than 37 percent, ana 54 percent. Brian Wilson has his baseball team working out daily indoors in preparation for the season opener at Streamwood on April 1st. Spirit is high in the Warrior camp, and they hope to improve on last year's record. Dehn, a senior forward on the" girls basketball teanj, . shattered a school scoring & as sbe pumped in 47 to lead the Skyhawks ^ui easy 81-16 victory over Hebron in the first round of the Marian Central Class A regionals Monday night. Dehn's performance, which included 21 field goals and 5-of-7 free throws, eclipsed the old standard of 35 points held by Laura Jacobs. The Skyhawks, who had already soundly beaten the Green Giants twice during the regular season, found the task no more tedious in post season play as they scored 20 points in each of the first two quarters to to take a com­ manding 40-6 lead by half- time. The Gators hounded the Lady Warriors with a full court press causing several turnovers and turning steals into breakaway layups for themselves. McHenry had difficulty getting the ball past midcourt and got only two more points in the quarter on a pair of Terry Blume free throws. South, meanwhile, got three assists from Scherman and four field goals from Lynn Naujokas to help take a 16-4 first quarter lead. The second quarter turned into a quick-tempoed run- and-gun affair as both teams traded fast break baskets. Karpavicius and Robin With Kelly Brough and Dawn Dobbertin both absent from the game due to illness, Wirtz had only eight players to work with and the fast pace dictated by South was simply too much to over­ come as the McHenry players were worn out by the game's end. Naujokas and Caryn Catencamp netted 12 points each to follow Scherman in scoring for the Gators, while Beth Stanners added eight. Karpavicius led the Lady Warriors with 11 points, while Geiger and senior Sue Smith, who played in her last game Monday night, added nine each. McHenry finished the season with an 8-14 overall record. Carl Moesche Tigers Claw Streaks McHENRY -- Crystal Lake Central broke open a close game in the second quarter to rout Woodstock 50-29 in the second game of Monday night's Class AA regional. The win was also the third straight for the Tigers over the Blue Streaks this season. Central led 10-9 at the end of one, then got its fast break going in the next eiglft minutes by outscoring Woodstock 12-2 for a 22-11 lead at intermission. Jackie Hustzi, Central's unanimous All-FVC forward and the league's second leading scorer, pumped in seven points in the third quarter as the Tigers took a commanding 36-13 lead. Woodstock outscored the Central reserves 16-14 in the final quarter, but the outcome was never in question. Hustzi led the winners with 16 points, while Jean Barry had 11, and Diane Pilgard added nine. Her follow-up of a missed shot two minutes later ac­ counted for the only McHenry points of the quarter. With one quarter remaining, South led 54-26. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Warriors outscored the Gator reserves 12-4, but the game was well decided by that point.
