Warriors Find Badminton More Than A Game 'eturning expected to nclude She McHENRY -- At McHenry high school the game of badminton is thought of as more than just a leisurly form of backyard recreation. At least that's the case for about 30 girls who are members of the Warrior badminton team. "It's a very competitive game for our girls," said fourth year coach Jean Natoli. "It doesn't take on the back yard atmosphere where the game is just for fun." Daily practice sessions at West campus constitute more than simply volleying the shuttlecock for an hour and a half. According to Natoli, players work on strategy, controlling their shots, making their opponent move, and hitting corner shots. "We work hard on our technique and skill," she added. This year the Warriors are working especially hard as graduation has 'claimed more than half of last year's team. The most noticeable void to fill is the number one singles position vacated by Jean Hoch. A senior last year, Hoch advanced to state where she brought a glossy 29-4 record into, the com petition. Fighting it out this year for the number one spot are Hoch's younger sister Donna, a junior, and senior Julie Dowell. Both are returning letterwinners. Graduation also took its toll on all three doubles teams, but the leading candidates include the tandems of Valerie Boeldt- Kim Miller and Jonnie Jo Huhn-Soe Toussaint. Other returning let terwinners expected to fill positions include Sherry Cristy, Char Einweck, Stephanie Hawkins, Bobbie Orin, and Sara Regner. First-year players include Roxa Ruiz, Debbie Meyer, Sandy Gilbert^ Barb Brisinte, Sheryl Groer, Claudia Budaj, Patti Hen derson, Sharon Foley, Laurie Leigh, Cornelia Flotz, Margaret Oleszczyk, Linda Gallo. Tracey Straza, Jackie Vankanegan, Kim Biggerstaff, Teresa Gert- sman, and Stacy Spenelly. McHenry had a winning season last year and Natoli is looking for a repeat performance this year. But at least the Warriors know that for the fourth straight year they already have the Fox Valley con ference title wrapped up. That's com because of only 92 mpeting schools in Illnois, McHenry is the only FVC Elgin Laridn at 4:90 p.m. competition on Tuesday, March 16 when they host school to field a team. The Warriors will begin Carl Moesche Shady Lane Wins Mat Title McHENRY -- Shady Lane junior high school of Fox Lake succesfully defended its Illinois Elementary School Association District "A" wrestling championship held at Parkland junior high on Saturday.
