Others didn't give a hoot. Bought a roll of stamps from Roger Collins and he proceeded to show me how to remove them from the inside like pulling binder twine out of a ball It's amazing what an old farmer like me can learn from a fellow who never saw a binder or a ball of twine. Earl "Marty" Conway, MCHS basketball star of another era (a rebounder deluxe), watches a lot of games on TV and has some views on the present race horse style of play. "Bring back the center jump," says Martv. Our dear editor received a photo copy of one of our recent columns showing a "Pickup" circled and note attached. It wa& evidently mailed to a public official anonymously. Not signing the note was the sender's own privilege. My German wife just bought a book of Irish songs which she says are for our granddaughter, Aleen, to play. I'll be listening. Until now I was never sure there was a song titled "The Hat Me Father Wore". It's in the book That is the song my father sang very early every St. Patricks Day Can't remember him singing any other day of the year. As a small boy, I thought an old derby hat hanging in the woodshed was the one in the song. Lakemoor-Liiymoor Area Margaret Karas 385-4934 1 Fire Destroys Vacant House A fire call Tuesday morning at 4:22 brought the McHenry Fire Department Company 3 to the scene in the woods of Lilymoor. Hie first floor of the house left vacant by former occupants, was already collapsing when the firemen arrived. The blaze was so high that Bruno and I thought it was our neighbor's home, so we were in our car at 4:40 a.m. If something must bum, vacant houses which leave no family homeless are the best to go. PROPHECY ' CONFERENCE Members of the Pen tecostal church of Lakemoor will be taking part in the three-day bible prophecy conference which will be held at the First Apostolic church in Aurora March 18, 19 and 20. Speakers will include the Reverends Robert Sabin and Gerald Grandt. Anyone interested in at tending the conference may call Cathy McCaulley at 344- 5849 or the Reverend Nolan Hildebrandt at 312 279-6289 for more information. ANNIVERSARY IN LILYMOOR The forty-sixth wedding anniversary of Herbert and Marge Polinski on March 21 will be celebrated by an evening out with family members. May the coming years bring health and contentment to the Polin- skis. Marge is secretary of the Lilymoor association. She reminds residents that dues paid to the association are used for road upkeep, lighting and beautifying the subdivision. Only about one-fourth of the families have con tributed so far which does not give the association much to work with. Having similar goals of im provement of conditions in Lilymoor should give all families the incentive to join and do their share. SPECIAL DAYS March 17 marks not only the day of recognition of St. Patrick, but also the day when Patricia Fay Dawdy becomes two years old. and pretty teen Debbie Vornkahl has her birthday. Spring cleaning time is recycling time, according to the McHenry County Defenders, who are spon soring the next recycling drive Saturday, March 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Market Place Parking lot on spurgeons NEW Seamless Beautiful Ones Sleek new bras from Playtex* Cross "four Heart' COOR West Route 120. Area residents are inyited to participate in this drive. Items which can be brought to the drive include newspapers securely tied (no magazines, cardboartjL/pr junk mail) ; glass containers rinsed and all nietal and plastic removed; steel ("'in") cans washed and flattened; used motor oil in plastic or metal containers; and aluminum scrap of all kinds. There is also an im mediate pay-back for all- aluminum cans brought to the drive. To prepare these materials for recycling, it is estimated that the average home owner will need to spend no more than one hour per month (6 minutes for the aluminum, 15 minutes for paper. 20 minutes for cans and 5 minutes per oil change for used motor oil). Since recycling saves valuable landfill space, garbage collection costs, natural resources and energy, this one hour per month would be well spent, according to a McHenry County Defenders spokesman. Encourage Police To Learn Hypnosis Use Forty-seven police officers from throughout McHenry county attended an all-day seminar on Criminal In vestigation and In terrogation at McHenry County college March 5. The seminar coordinated by the college and taught by Ogle County Sheriff Jerry Brooks was sponsored by the McHenry County Chiefs of Police association. Brooks, who is affiliated with the Midwest Clinical Hypnosis Institute, en couraged the detectives and investigative personnel attending the seminar to learn more about the use of hypnosis to help witnesses and police officers remember' incidents and evidence at the crime scene. Brooks took the officers through the entire arrest and court process in his discussions. A graduate of the National Academy of the FBI, Brooks lectures on hypnosis and investigation techniques throughout the U.S. Scholarships Offered By Wonder Lake Club The Women's club of Wonder Lake will invest in the future of two students from Wonder Lake who are planning to continue their education beyond high school. Spring Cleaning Time Aids City Recycling FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 17, 1932) A lawsuit between the Richmond school district and the McHenry Com munity high school district was held at the city hall before Justice of the Peace William J. Welch. The suit was more or less a friendly one in the effort to ascertain just what the law decides in the question of the payment of tuition when a transfer is ordered. The jury decided in favor of Richmond, which upheld the idea that they were not required to pay tuition. Miss Eleanor May, who has been taking a course in beauty culture in Chicago, took the state board examination for a beauty culture operator and received the returns. Her report showed that she had an average of over 99 in the written work, the highest rank in a class of more than 50. In the personal work Miss May had an average of 84. The highest mark given by the state examiners on practical work is 85. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 19, 1942) Miss Verena Justen, daughter of Mrs. N.J. Justen and sister of Peter M. Justen of McHenry, was elected president of the Soroptimist club of Pittsburgh. The Soroptimist club is a national organization open only to women who are executives of companies or managers of businesses. Verena Justen was tran sferred from Chicago to the Pittsburgh office of her company in 1934. When asked if the name Verena was a family name, she said she was born on Sept. 1 and it was St. Verena day, so that was the name her mother chose for her. In the bowling news, Agnes Freund's 496 and Betty Regner's 482 gave the Regner Grocers three straight from the Fords. Esther Freund's 435 sparked the Fords. Rovena Mar shall's 465 and Helen Con way's 456 led Karls' Cafe in two over Riverside Dairy. Lorraine Thennes led off and paced the Dairy with 434. That Busse kid is still hitting them, a 466 for Betty. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 21, 1957) An interesting bond signing meeting was held by the board of education of High School District 156, at which time five members spent several hours in af fixing their signatures to 1,250 bonds for the erection of the new addition. Because the one and one-quarter million dollars worth of bonds became negotiable upon bearing signatures, police escorted board members to the local bank vault at 11:30 that night. A Brinks truck will take them to the Northern Trust company of Chicago. A check for the amount mentioned above will then be sent to the McHenry board by the bank. The purchase of two new combination tankers and pumpers now brings^ the total pieces of equipment earned by the McHenry Township Fire Protection district to seven. These will be used in the three stations within the district. Station I is McHenry; Station II, Johnsburg; and Station III, Lakemoor. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 24, 1972) Property owners along Illinois Rt. 120 West and city officials met with engineers from the State of Illinois Division of Highway to review maps and the proposed widening of the highway. The proposed improvement concerns the widening and resurfacing of FAP Route 21 (Illinois Route 120) from west of Ringwood- Draper road to east of the intersection of Illinois Route 31 (a distance of 2.06 miles) Victorious candidates in the primary election were Jack Schaffer, R., of Cary, for state senator; Calvin "CalM Skinner, R., and Thomas Hanahan, D., McHenry, for state representative; Albert M. Jourdan, Jr., county auditor and W.H. "Bill" Russel, recorder of deeds.
