There's still a long way to go but much progress is being made. Then: During the past 150 years, infectious diseases and a variety of pre and post-natal problems have been progressively eliminated as major causes of death. Cancer was not suspected to be a major problem then because it is a disease which does not usually appear until later in life. Although cancer is a very old disease, little was known about it Now: A considerable amount is known about cancer incidence, and one thing that scientists know but may surprise many other people is that the age-adjusted cancer mortality rate- with the main exception of lung cancer-is not going up, but down. There is no epidemic of cancer. Americans can markedly reduce their risk of getting cancer by smoking less, eating less, eating a balanced, low-fat, high-fiber diet and by drinking only moderate amounts of alcohol, recommend the researchers at the National Cancer In stitute.
