See Your Simplicity Dealer For arious Types And Prici Warriors Face Tough Field At Kellogg Course A total of 15 schools will be represented in the Illinois High School Association state golf tournament held at Kellogg Country Club today and tomorrow. Among the elite 15, are the McHenry Warriors. Charlie Cuda, the Warrior coach, feels this is his best team ever and is hoping for a better finish than the third place in 1977. Althougbhe won't admit it to the press, he knows his team can possibly come away with a state title. That would only be fitting for a team that scored a 290 in the regional* for a first place at the McHenry Country club and captured the £ake Forest sectionals. To bring home a state title, the Warriors will have to beat the state's best golfing teams. New Trier will be one of those teams. New Trier captured the Hersey Sectional with a score of 311. The Warriors carded a 314 at Lake Forest And right behind New Trier were Glenbrook South and Loyola Academy at 313. Individually, the Warriors will have to battle such golfers as Mike Jonas of Bufflo Grove who carded a 73 and Steve O'Bryan of New Trier at 74. Sandy Thompson of Loyola Academy carded a 75. "There will be a lot of good teams," said Cuda. "We always felt we had a top notch club. We do have a good chance this time." New Trier did turn in the top sectional score, but Cuda says that doesn't mean anything. "It depends on the course. We had a strong wind off the lake." "I think the kids had a little letdown after scoring that 290. It's hard to say what we're capable of." Each school will have up to six golfers and the top four will count. The players will play two rounds of 18 holes. Last year, Danville won the class AA title with scores of 314 and 319 for a total of 633. Kellogg Country Club measures 6444 yards with par at 36-36 for a total of 72. It's a course, according to Cuda, that the short game plays a big part "I like the course and I think the kids will to," said Cuda. "It's a good course -- it's challenging. You need the short game and the short game is right up our alley. "The name of the game for us is consistency. We always been in pretty good shape with our consistency." 40 on the the first round. He played holes 10 through 18 for the firts round. Neumann finished the day with a 81 total. STAFFPHOTO--MIKELAMB. CHIP SHOT -- Steve Svec chips the hall onto hole number four green. Replacing the all-everything of a year ago, Hugh Brennan at tide-end, is 6-3 Brian Schweitzer, who is the favorite target of the passing of Murphy. The Warriors are desperately looking for a win after a homecoming defeat at the hands of Crown last week. Coach Schlender remarked, "We are forgetting last week. No injuries, the morale is high and we are going to dent the win column this week." Hunter Safety Course The city of McHenry Department of Parks and Recreation and the Illinois Department of Conservation are sponsoring a Hunter Safety Training Course. Area residents will have an opportunity to learn basic principles of safe huntin$V,This course is" scheduled from 6-10 p.m. on October 19 and 21 at Parkland Junior High School. For further information about this course, contact the coordination in structor, Joe Catanzaro at 385-0565 or the Department of Parks and Recreation at 344-3300. DICKRABBITT , The McHenry Warriors hope to rebound tomorrow afternoon from its defeat to Crown last week and win their first conference game of the season at Cary-Grove. One can only recall last year's game, when, the Warriors won on a last second pass from Mullen to Rudman that covered 90 yards to defeat the Fox Valley champs 18-14. The Trojans under a new coach; Mike Buck, a newcomer to the area from Michigan, are winless this season. The defending FVC champs have a young team and have to rely on a lot of juniors, which up to this time, has given them a lot of trouble. The Trojans have some experience to go along with the youngsters. Bob Murphy, a senior quarterback, is a returning letterman and according to Buck has adapted to some changes made this season. Dave Helmer at 5- 11 and 190 pounds is the running back that gets the call the majority of the time. Other backs are Matt Erickson and Dave Stauffer, both juniors. The weak spot in the Trojan attack, according to Buck is the lack of depth in the offensive line. Some of the lineman the Warriors will have to face are Ned Brandosche, a jj-11170 pound senior at center, 225 pound Danny Boltz and 190 pound Jim Lawrence at Lose just one day during the planting season, and it could make all the difference between a good crop and a poor one. That's why you should be equip ped with a Johnson FM two-way radio. With two-way radio, if your engine quits, you can simply call for help. Chances are, a mechanic can get to you and get you going again while there's still some daylight left. But without two-way radio, you'd just have to start walking. There are a lot of other ways Johnson FM radio can save you time and money. Why not let us show you how you can lease or own a complete two-way system for as little as 75' a day. Hurdle With First Place MIKE LAMB LAKE FOREST -- The McHenry Warrior golf team cleared the last hurdle to qualify for the state tour nament with a first place finish in the Lake Forest class AA sectional held at Lake Bluff Golf Club. The Warriors traveled down to Peoria 111. Wednesday evening to prepare for the Illinois High School Association State tournament held Friday and Saturday. s' "This, is the first time since I have been in McHenry we have finished first as a team in the sectionals. We qualified before," ^aia Warrior golf Coach, Chuck Cuda><Wia\has been golf coach at McHenr>ufOM2 years. He added, "We went over)the last hurdle, one more to go." The Warriors shot a 314 as a team for the winning score. Rockford Guilford finished behind the Warriors with a 318 and Deerfield was third with a 319. Those two teams qualified with the Warriors to compete at Peoria. Steve Svec led the Warriors with a five over par, 77. Right behind him was Brad Adams with a 78, Kirk Barnicle 79, Chris Vehring 80, Tom Neumann 81 and Mike Bauml 86. Bauml's score was thrown out. The lowest score was turned in by Jeff Hartman of Freeport and Darren Stanek of Jacobs with 74's. Right behind them was Kevin Crystal Lake South and Jim of Carmel at 75. Although the Warriors captured the sectional title by four strokes, Cuda did sweat out the second round. With his players turning scores in the low 40's, he knew they had to turn in second round scores in the 30's to qualify for the state tournament. While Barnicle and Svec each turned in a 37 in the first round, Adams shot a 37 and Neumann, Svec and Vehring each shot a 40 in the second round to help put together the winning score^ "The kids did come through," saia \ tty Par Cuda. "That shows a sign of a pretty good team when they can come back like that." Svec^ in his first round score of 37, only had two bogeys. He parred the rest of the holes, except for hole number seven. He birdied the par three, 153 yard hole. He only carded four bogeys during the second round. Adams only bogeyed three holes in his second round score of 37. He parred the last five holes. Cuda was very happy with the first place finish and the scores, but he feels his team can do more. "I really feel they really have not shown what they really can do. Now we go to Peoria for state and it starts all over." PUTT -- Tom Neumann makes his putt on the 10th hole green, while a playing partner studies his balL Neumann parred the hole and wound up with a AMBOY--Marian Central's boys cross country team crossed a major hurdle in their bid to reach the Class A state finals as they finished fifth in the 35-team Amboy Invitational Monday. The meet drew most the the Class A (small school) cross country powers in he state. "We were pretty pleased (with the finish), said Hurricane coach Hans Rokus. "That's a pretty good in dication of how we're progressing. It was tougher than a state meet" Marian had 249 points. Streator- Woodland, the state's fourth-ranked Class A team, captured first place with 147 points. That's the cry of Coach Chuck Cuda and his McHenry golf team, as they won the class AA sectioi.al at Lake Bluff on Tuesday. The Warriors with a 314 total, defeated Rockford Guilford at 318 and Deerfield with 319 to Advance to Peoria today and tomorrow for the state finals. Steve Svec with a 77 led the Warriors in this all important meet.' Last Thursday the Warriors shot an unbelievable 290 to win the regional meet. This has to be some kind of state record. The weekly roundup of golf by the Chicago papers failed to mention the Warriors on its regional win. Nearest team was Loyola with a 299. The Warriors defeated Loyola by eight strokes at the Lake Forest Invitational. Others mentioned in the article shot anywhere from 314 to 337. Let's hope the Warriors have a good weekend in Peoria and show the big city folks we in the Crysta The Acres in Crystal Lake for the McHenry County meet. It looks as if it will be another Warrior- ,rstal Lake Central battle for the title. 'Fighting Warriors" of Joe Schlender will take to daylight ball tomorrow when they take on the Trojans. A disappointing loss last weekend at homecoming to Crown, has not put a damper on the genial coach's attitude. Steve Carby got nosed out by Doug Schroeder of York. Steve finished -two seconds behind the winner. Springfield Lamphier finished second to York. Last season the Warriors nipped Lamphier for the second spot. From all reports, our good friends Joe Newton of Yore has another powerhouse and is favorite to win state again. Tomorrow the Warriors are at Veterans may take me to task for this, I believe the officiating at the Crown game was of very poor quality. There is no excuse for being lazy on the field and it was quite evident last Friday night. The Warriors nave promised to come back this week and defeat the Troians. Coach Schlender put them through a tough workout on Tuesday and told me the "Warriors will come back and still be heard from in the Fox Valley." Mike Shanahan's girls' swimming team, although not winning too many meets, are setting some team and school records for future swimmers to try and overcome. Only 12 girls are on the team. Pam Shaffer's volleyball team played 10 games over the weekend at the North Chicago tourney and split their games. The girls are having a tough time of it, but the future looks bright for the volleyball team. Gary Gray's young tennis team is holding its own. They win when they are the top team and lose when they are not. The future is very bright for the popular mentor. The Warriors, Sky hawks and Dundee really put a crack in the crystal ball. One of these days I'm going to hit the jackpot and then watchout. This week I'll pick the state ranked Crystal Lake Gators over Jacobs. The Gators are 10th in the poll for class four-A. The Warriors to rebound from the Crown defeat and beat the Trojans of Cary-Grove for the second time in a row. Central to defeat Crown and spoil the Vikings homecoming. The Streaks to beat Dundee, where two of the best passers in the league will tangle; Bradshaw of Woodstock and Carroll of Dundee. Immaculate Conception, not one of my favorites, to beat the Hurricanes for Coach Jack Lewis of Immaculate Conception 100th career win. Wauconda to beat the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks had their chance last week, but extra points proved costly.
