LET US TURN THIS (NICE) OPEN AIR SCREEN ROOM In 32 years as golf coach; '82 is the best For 32 years, Chuck Cuda has been the golf coach far the McHeary Warriors. Ifthe 31 years be has been golfing coach was a cake, 1982 would be the frosting. His team terrorized the Fax Valley Conference and other foes, finishing the season with a 12-0 dual record. His Warrior golfers captured the Randall Oaks Invitational and took a second at the mini-state Lake Forest Invitational. They went on to capture the FVC, district and sectionals. Just six strokes fell between a Warrior perfect season, as the Cuda golfers settled with a second at the state meet. "I had a lot of good outstanding teams, but this has to be the best," said Cuda. The best a Warrior soif team finished at the Illinois state meet under the guidance of Cuda, was third. That happened in 1977. The sectional title was the first for a Warrior team. Cuda ondnaQy came to McHenrv as a basketball coach, but golf became his specialty. His credentials in golf include playing on the varsity golf squad at Michigan State. When asked of his secret for success, Cuda has one word, "discipline." "You have to nit a lot time in golf. Very tough discipline. Ifs mental. You have to make them understand no bogeys or double bogeys-. You makes bad shot, forget it and play your game. It's a self < "You have to encourage him (beginning golfer). Make him work, doesn't like other sports, then have mm work at golf. Just work at it" Cuda is a lover of all sports except baseball. He doesn't like The baseball swing screws up a good golf swing. To make a Warrior squad, Cuda says a golfer has to play in a lot of tournaments during the summer. If he doesn't, Cuda says he won't be able to handle the pressure. Cuda says die thing you have to remember about golf is it's an individual sport "You can't substitute. We cannot talk to the kids while they are on the course. They have to do it alone." Graduated golfers out of the Cuda numerous squads nave experienced success later an. Jim Buenxli is the top golfer at the University of Illinois and be has four alumni on the Northern Illinois University golfing ftfini Chuck Cuda has experienced quite a bit of success in his 32 years, but he stresses that success isn't the most important benefit. 'Tm more interested in seeing these kids build in character. I'm to build character. The name of the game is to build these kids with character." This has been a special year for the veteran coach. And like all successful coaches, he gsated to thssk a lot of people. Especially' two groups; his family and the parents. His family has helped him with managing die Warrior golf he started golfing. He iust couldn't say enough about the parents. > "Their (the golfers) families followed the kids at all the meets -- that's encouraging to them."
