LEAVES GOT YOU DOWN? Warriors Prepare For Air Attack Cardinal Coach Hiller Returns To Series really came out for it. I still have a lot of friends in Johnsburg. It's a nice area. Hiller now lives in St.r Petersburg, Fla. in the offseason Photos of that day and the 1962 World Series still are posted in the Johnsburg Community Club House. . Hiller is very fona of the idea that the series was played just a hour and h&lf away from Johnsburg. ~ • I "It makes it nice for my family. And it's nice to have two new teams and two midwest teams. People are going to find out there are some pretty good ballplayers in the midwest.'" While the Cardinals in the World Series had some people surprised, Hiller wasn't. "Last year we had the best record in our division. We didn't make it, because of our baseball commissioner. "I knew we had a chance to make it. If you can stay away from injuries, you figure you have a good chance." Hiller is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hiller of Johnsburg. He played baseball for St. Thomas College in Minnesota and was signed by the Cleveland Indians. Later on, he was drafted by the San Fransico Giants and played in the Texas League, were he led the league in hitting. It wasn't long and the Giant skipper at that time, Alvin Dark, brought up the young left handed hitter. After his playing days, Hiller began to work as a manager in the New York Met organization. That is where he met up with Whitey Herzog. When Herzog moved in as general manager of the Cardinals, there was a rumor making the rounds, Hiller would be named manager. But Herzog took over the skipper position as well as still holding onto the general manger position. Being a manager in the big leagues is not major goal for Hiller. "I don't really feel a This interview was conducted on telephone before the first game at Milwaukee. The outcome of the series was not known to Hiller or the reporter. history. He hit the first grand slam for a National League club in the World Series. Sparked by his grand slam, the Giants went on to win the game 7-3 and the series. Today, 1982, on the 20th anniversary of that "shot", Hiller made it bade for a second world series. This time, however, the 47-year-old Hiller didn't play second base or was he able to hit a grand slam. But the decisions he made did have somewhat of a bearing how the world series ended up. Hiller is the third base coach for the St. Louis Cardinals. The former McHenry Warrior, has been the third base coach for the Cardinals for the last two seasons. He came to St. Louis with Whitey Herzog; the manager and general manager. Hiller has followed Herzog from the New York Met organization and was his third base coach when managing the Kansas City Royals in the American League. The Royals made it to the American League playoffs three straight years while Herzog and Hiller where at the helm. But they could never beat those darn Yankees for the American League Championship and trip to the World Series. But now Herzog and Hillerf have done it. And Hiller is glad to be back for the fall classic. "It feels pretty good," said Hiller. "This is kind of what you work for. I would like to be World Series Champions again and get a World Series ring out of it. The extra money is kind of nice too. "Everybody strides for it. Some players don't ever make it." Hiller remembers the last World Series and he'll never forget the reception he received when he came back to Johnsburg on Oct. 28, 1962, just (me week after the series. That day was proclaimed Chuck Hiller day. "It was nice. They had big parade and and I had a big thrill. It was really nice of them. They have proven it that they belong. "We might have a bit more "I don't care how many games it goes, as long as we win it." The McHenry Plaindealer Once again the Johnsburg Skyhawks try to pick themselves up / after a defeat and take on the next opponent, in hopes of winning a football game. Saturday, the Skyhawks take on the Bears of Lake Zurich. The Bears are much like the Skyhawks, riding a losing streak. The Bears streak isn't quite as long as the Skyhawks though. They won the first three games of the season, only to lose the next two. The Bears are now 1-2 in the Northwest Suburban Conference and 2-3 overall. Skyhawk coach, Randy Oberembt has respect for the Lake Zurich team. He believes the teachers strike at Lake Zurich might have effected its momentum and that's why it lost the last two games. Last week Lake Zurich lost to Antioch 30-16. John sburg was defeated by Wauconda 34-6. "They are big and are dominated with seniors," said Oberembt describing the Lake Zurich team. "They throw the the ball well. They are a throwing team and use a lot of motion and they also are a roll out team." So far, Johnsburg hasn't had much success against teams who pass well. Again and again the Skyahawk defense has been burned by the deep pass. Offensively, the Skyhawks are coming off a rough outing against Wauconda. The Bulldog defense didn't allow A Johnsburg first down until late in the third quarter. The running game was shutdown completely. "We have to improve in every phase of the game," said Oberembt. "We had a great rushing game against Grant, but we lost that last week. We have to mix it up and throw on the early downs." Oberembt says the Bears have two good receivers in Gordie Green and a sophomore, Wayne Hurth. The main Bear runningback is Steve Radecki. up to a 11-2 lead. The Warriors failed to ignite any kind of a rally and lost 15- 4. The second game started to look just like the first game. The Golden Eagles scored the first five points. The Warriors, this time came back and tied the game at 6-6 with Kelly Pierce serving. Jacobs took a timeout right away to regroup. The timeout helped a little, as Jacobs was able to build a 10-7 lead. With the momentum changing back to Jacobs, Schaffer decided to take a time out. It didn't help and the Golden Eagles jumped off to a 14-8 lead. The Warriors, however recaptured the serve and handed the ball to Andee Norton. The Warriors scored two straight points on her serving and Jacobs took a time out with a 14-10 lead. The Warriors scored two more times, before losing the serve. (Continued on page 7) After losing the first game, the McHenry Warriors took the Jacobs Golden Eagles to the wire in the second game, only to lose in the last home match of the season at West Campus. The loss dropped the Warrior record to 3-10 in the Fox Valley and 5-11 in overall. Jacobs had the same record as the Warriors coming into the contest, but McHenry Coach Pam Schaffer decided to play all her seniorVand other players who did not play much during the season, instead of/the regulars. / "In my regular starting lineup, there is only one senior," said Schaffer. "I don't think it mattered who was in the game, we did poorly in serving. There was no setting up in the second game."
