is • PLA1NDEALEK - WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER Storage Problems by Brian Sager, Extension Adviser, Agriculture Every year farmers face problems with stalk rot and ear rots in corn. When ear rots are common, producers can anticipate storage problems as kernels damaged by the ear rot fungi, are easily invaded by storage mold fungi. In addition, seed coat damage, resulting from harvesting and handling light test-weight grain from stalk rot affected plants, can open the way for the fungi. Unfortunately, the incidences of Gito- berella, Fusarium, and Diplodia ear rot are higher this year than in recent years. However, plant pathologists ex pect that neither Aspergillus ear rot nor Aflatoxin will produce significant problems this year. Grain produced in fields where ear rots are common should be dried to 14 percent or less moisture to prevent storage mold toxins. Ear corn should not be stored above 20 percent moisture. After drying, grain should be kept cool and watched for signs of developing mold problems. These include heating, a musty odor, and crusting. Vigilance is important since storage molds will produce their own moisture and heat once they start growing. Grain storage fungi such as .Aspergillus cannot grow in grain stored at less than 13 to 14 percent moisture. Other factors i that can increase storage mold losses are rapid drying at high temperatures and damage from augers or insects. Old insect-infested grain should be cleaned from auger pits and the bin should be cleaned and Created for insects. Only sound, undamaged grain should be stored at moistures between 14 and 18 percent for long periods. An alternative to drying grain is to treat with propionic acid preservatives. Aeid grain preservatives inhibit mold growth. They do not, however, inactivate or remove mycotoxins. Grain treated this way can only be fed to livestock. It cannot legally be sold for human consumption. Acid treatment may be an excellent alternative for livestock feeders who must store corn u n d e r t e m p o r a r y storage. Grain stored outdoors in temporary storage without acid treatment should be stored as* dry as possible and provisions made to move air through the grain mass. The grain should also be probed frequently to detect storage problems in their early stages. If ears show the pinkish mold growth c h a r a c t e r i s t i c o f Gibberella, livestock feeders should have the grain checked for possible mycotoxin problems. Mycotoxins produced by this fungus cause reproductive and feeding problems in swine, horses, and other livestock. CONSUMER ^CHECKLIST Coat Cleaners Suede can be cleaned by gently rubbing ground oat meal in a circular motion with a clean cloth. Brush out powder with a wire brush. Remove grease stains on leather with a thick mixture of Fuller's paste and water. Brush paste off when dry. A* >*3? I Today's Sportswear 14.88 Oakhill Blouses. Reg. 20.00.
