Play Good Game, But Lose PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 10,1982 BARB ANSELL Even though the Johnsburg scoreboard reflected a 0-21 score, as the Warren Blue Devils shutout the Skyhawks in their last game of the year, it was One of the Skyhawks better games fundamentally. Johnsburg Coach Randy Oberembt was quite pleased with the Skyhawk performance, "We played an ex­ tremely good game. It was a fine performance by the seniors who participated in their final high school game. The seniors contributed a lot this year and they should be proud of their efforts." The Skyhawk defense was out­ standing during the first half, as they only allowed the Blue Devils to slij thru their line once. The Devils' St Sehl scored early in the first qi on a five yard run and the extra point kick by Steve Jarrell gave the Devils a 7-0 lead which was the way the score remained until halftime. The Devils had the ball to start the second half and they made use of their possession as they ran the ball down field to score. Ken Iwema scored for the Devils on a three yard run and Jarrell's successful extra point boosted the Devils to a 14-0 lead. * Hie Skyhawks who had been in scoring range twice during the first half again moved deep into Devil territory on Jeff Jayko's 20-yard pass to Mike Hurckes, along with several completed passes to M.J. Anderson, Eric Bear and Tom Huemann. But the Skyhawks once again within the Devils 10-yard line were unable to score as Anderson and Bear couldn't hold onto Jayko's passes in the end zone. The Blue Devils capped the victory as Dean Sjong scored on a two yard run and Jarrell's kick gave the Devils a 21-0 lead. The Skyhawks however made a final attempt to score. John Mied- zianowski returned the Devils kickoff 40 yards the Skyhawks just outside the 50-yard line. Jayko connected with Hurckes on a 30-yard pass and then again on a 10-yard toss, placing the Skyhawks inside the Devils 20-yard line. On second and third downs the passes to Anderson and Hurckes were incomplete. Jayko tried once again, this time throwing to Bear, but in­ stead the pass was intercepted by the Devils' Iwema who thwarted John- sburg's attempts to get on the scoreboard. Coach Oberembt complimented his team on their final efforts, "We moved the ball very well against a team that was ranked third in the state out of the 5-A schools. We played tough all the way thru tty£ game and we did more than just go thru the motions." The Skyhawks did manage to move the ball through the air as they passed for 250 yards. Devil's Coach Mike Kunkle praised the Skyhawks. "They threw the ball quite well and they are one of the best passing teams in the conference. It was a hard fought game." Knukle believes next year's team will be a team to be reckoned with, "Those kids just don't quit. They keep hitting you until they've broken you down. They'll definitely be a team to worry about next year, especially after Antioch and Warren pull out of this conference. "We've built a solid foundation for the future," said Oberembt. We had the ball inside the 20-yard line four times and didn't score. So we will have to work on building a bigger and stronger goal line offensive players we can run the ball in. Oberembt praised the tremendous support of the parents, fans, ad­ ministration and students who have supported the team throughout the season. "With their support, we played well Saturday and we'll go into next fall coming off a good per­ formance. St. Francis Rolls Over Marian; 20-7 WHEATON -- St. Francis scored one touchdown in the first period and added two more in the second as it claimed a 20-7 non-conference victory over Marian Central Saturday. The season-ending loss dropped Marian's record to 4-5 overall. St. Francis also closed the season at 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the West Suburban Catholic Conference. St. Francis scored first in the opening quarter and held a 6-0 lead until Marian's Jeff Cychner tallied on a 30-yard pass from quarterback Chuck Hartlieb in the second quarter. Hartlieb's extra point kick boosted the Hurricanes into a temporary 7-6 lead. But later in the period, St. Francis' Tony DiSerio put nis team on top to stay when he recovered a Hurricane fumble and bolted 45 yards for a score and a 12-7 lead. St. Francis added an insurance touchdown later in the second quarter when Rob Johnson tallied on a 97-yard run. He also scored on a two point conversion to make the final 20-7. the Hurricanes routed St. Francis 38-0 to wrap up a 6-3 season. Dan Fortin scored four touchdowns, including two passes from Chris Seiler. Seiler scored another on his own. Tom Will passed for three, two-point conversions and kicked an extra point. Mike Green dominated on defense. In other weekend West Suburban Catholic Conference varsity games, Montini wrapped up a class 4A state playoff berth despite losing 38-35 to Driscoll. Wottreng Makes It To State Meet AMBOY -- Marian Cental's John Wottreng put on a late surge to finish in ninth place in Saturday's Class A Amboy cross country sectional and earn a trip to this weekend's state finals in Peoria. The Marian Central junior com­ pleted the three-mile eourse in 15:34. Elmhurst-Immaculate Conception's John King, the defending individual state champion, finished first in 14:14. This will be the sixth straight year that Marian has either qualified in­ dividuals or teams for the state finals. It will be Wottreng's third consecutive tap- Johnsburg's Jay Jackson failed to qualify. The leg that hindered him through most of the season forced the senior to drop out of the race. He was Johnsburg's only entry at the see- tionai. The Lake Region YMCA Aerialettes Gymnastic team is hosting a YMCA Invitational Gym­ nastic meet Saturday at Crystal Lake Central High School.
