4 ̂ PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 5,1983 Former Warrior Swimmer And Runner Cepulis Hoping To Score Big With Illini MIKE LAMB Anybody who has started at the bottom and worked up can ap preciate Wade Cepulis., The former McHenry Warrior and now a student at the University of Illinois, was the seventh man on a seven man traveling squad for the Fighting Illini cross country team this last fall. He is also preparing for the indoor track season. But the former Fox Valley Conference cross country champion is competing Without the luxury of a scholarship. Like most freshmen walk ons, Cepulis is trying to make the traveling squad for the track season and at the same time make a lasting impression on Coach Gary Wieneke. He is the coach for both the cross country team and track teams at the University of Illinois. He is the oi)e who makes the scholarship choieesr^ they said ^ if I showed im provement /running at the Big T*n level, I could possibly get a scholarship," said Cepulis. "That is what i'm shooting for. There are five runners on the squad who have scholarships. There iS only a certain amount of scholarships and they are spread out through track and cross country. ; "When a spot opens up, it could bp used for recruiting." While it may seem the fresh- rian from McHenry is starting at the very bottom, the bottom is deeper. Cepulis said 20 runners tped out for the seven spots. He s&id he was lucky in landing the* list spot on the squad. It veloped when a fifth year Air orce ROTC senior .had backed c|ut when he found out he had go into the Air Force. Cepulis as a McHenry Warrior was just as hectic as his current career with Illinois. As a senior during the 1980 high school cross country season, he finished first of the seasort, he ran a time of 9:50 in the two mile and a 4:38 in the mile. The relay team finished fourth at the district meet, the transition from high school Athletes Away "There is a lot of mental preparation involved, You can do all the road work, but when it comes to the race, you have to be mentally prepared." Wade Cepulis i Cepulis himself is involved with the the Air Force ROTC program and has plans on 'being a pilot. Track and cross country are only a stepping stone to his career in t"he Air Force. in the district meet. He was a swimmer during the winter. During the 1980-81 season, Cepulis turned in the third best time at McHenry in the 500 yard freestyle with a 5:30 time and the fourth best 200 freestyle time at 1:59. He was voted the most valuable player on the squad that year: ^ -• 1 In track he competed in the two mile run, the mile run and the two mile relay. During the last meet * to college has been rough, ac cording to Cepulis. "There is not very much free time. What fre^ time you do have is used for studying or sleeping. There is a lot more discipline. . "There is a lot of mental preparation involved .You can do all the road work, but when it comes to the race, you have to be mentally prepared. You have to know what to do -- that's one of the important things of com peting." Cepulis didn't exactly burn up any turf during his first cross country season, but he did make the team and he did a respectable job competing in a tough Big Ten. He competed in all of the meets the Illini competed in. His best performance came at the Purdue Invitational were he placed 38th out of 144 runners. His time was 27:20 for the five mile course. Illinois tied for first as a team. At the Illinois Collegiate championships, he placed 40th out of 130 runners with a time of 32:40 in the 10,000 meter race. The Illinois squad finished second as a team. The Fighting Illini went on to place fifth in the Big Ten Championship with a squad that featured three freshmen and one sophomore. According to Cepulis, Wieneke expects his young squad to im prove upon their fifth place in the Big Ten&and can contend for the national championship. Big Ten neighbor, Wisconsin, won the 1982 national title. Although he feels he could have done better, Cepulis is satisfied with his first collegiate season. "My goal was to make the top seven, but I'm not satisfied with the way I ended the season. I'm looking forward to the next cross country season." His first season also helped him prepare for next fall. "It showed me what level I have to reach and what I have to shoot for and what conditioning I'll have to achieve to compete at that level." Right now, Cepulis is preparing for tl^e indoor track season. He said his event in the indoor will be the three mile run. He will compete in the 10,000 metei^ run during the outdoor season. Not involved in swimming anymore, which enables Cepulis to run all winter, he expects to see more improvement. Point production was difficult to achieve by the j. Warriors as Bill Herrmann led-Warrior scoring with only 10 points and Steve Babb scored eight. Randy Lively, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored six. John Stulas of Schaumburg, led all scorers with 24 points. 1 Scoring performances of 20 against Riverside-Brookfield and 14 against Downers Grove North, helped Lively gain all-tournament honors. Despite the loss, Ludwig did feel his Warriors gained from the tour nament. "We got to play four games, against different competition and we did manage to win two games." After matching baskets in the early minutes of the opening period, Stulas took charge with three quick baskets for the Saxons and the Warriors trailed 14-8 at |he end of the first period. In the second period, both teams slowed down to a waltz, but the Saxons outscored the locals 10-6 to grab a 10 point margin at intermission 24-14. Herrmann and Babb kept the Saxons from running away with the game in the thrid period, scoring 10 of the 12 Warrior points in the period. The Saxons maintained a 37-26 lead. The senior guard suffered a pulled hamstring muscle early in the game and may be out of action for next two weeks. "When you take a starter out of the lineup, it's kind of tough," Darby said. "He's the catalyst of our press and without his quickness it Effected us." Brad Hutter had his best .game of the tourney, popping for 23 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. "Hutter played an absolutely super game," the Streak assistant said. "He's coming along real well." Jamie Eriksen, the hero of Wednesday's win over Downers Grove North, turned in 14 points and was named to the all- tournament team. St. Viator's Sean Henning led all scorers with 25 points, while Tom Kaufman turned in 18 and Mike Leonard added 15. Good value is why millions keep coming back to H&R Block.
