Brad Miller and Karl Swimmers Win Without Divers ELGIN -- Who needs divers anyway? The McHenry Warrior swimming team just edged Elgin 63-61 Tuesday, despite entering the dual with no divers entered. "It went down to the last relay," said Warrior Coach Mike Shanahan. "Having no divers put us in the hole." It was the first dual win of season for the Warriors who are now IZ. Both relay teams captured firsts. The 200 medlay relay consited of Greg Hall, Bob Schaeffer, Darren Cepulis and Mike McNish; and finished with a time of 1:54.4.^The 400 yard medlay relay team consisted of Greg Karcz, Mike McNish, Terry Harth and Rich Miller; and was timed at 4:09.0. Other individual firsts were recorded by Miller, Cepulis and Schaeffer. Miller captured the 200 yard free sytle with a time of 2:06.2 arid the 500 free style with a time of 5:50.4. Cepulis captured the 220 Individual Medaly with a time of 2:19.5 and the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.7. Schaeffer was the winner in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.9. STAFF PHOTO -- WAYNE GAYLORD BARB ANSELL The McHenry County College Scots were unable to start a new trend, opening up the new year with a con ference loss to the Morton College Panthers 85-64. The Scots overall record falls to 1-6 arid beginning the first round of Skyway Conference competition with an 0-1 record. MCC Coach Bruce Harbecke looked' at the game two ways. "We looked better than we did when, we played Morton last week (MCC lost to the Panthers 88-57 in tournament action last Thursday). The hustle and the effort the players displayed was outstanding." However, Harbecke says the team must concentrate on improving the obvious mistakes, or face a rather long season. "We must eliminate the costly turnovers and easy shooting errors. We are not going to be able to win shooting 34 percent." The scots did have a respectable first half. Although the Morton Panthers leaped out to an early 21-13 lead, the Scot's Mark Wilkinson took control of the offense and proceeded to swish consecutive, unanswered baskets to put the Scots ahead 22-21. MCC continued to apply pressure to Morton's offense, but free throw opportunties allowed the Panther's the chance to once again catch the Scots and take the half-time lead of 40- 33. > - Once the second half began, Morton managed to move far out of reach of Jhe Scots. Within the first five minutes he Panthers had padded their ad- antage with 13 points, giving them a 55-35 lead. It was a lead which the Scots would never be able to close. Not only was the Scot's shooting percentage low. making only 26 out of 77 attempted field goals, compared to Morton's low 48 percent, but they were also beaten on the boards with Morton.pulling down 42 rebounds and MCC only grabbing 30 rebounds. The Scot's Wilkinson gave the Scots 20 points and Witt added 19 points, making use of Morton's many tur novers and break away opportunties. However, several break away fa$"uPs were missed by several other MCC players which cost them valuable points. Harbecke praised the efforts of' Wikinson and Witt, but feels it will « I. K i Rocket Wrestler Breaks Pin Record RICHMOND -- The fastest pin in Illinois State High School Association history was recorded during a double dual meet at Richmond-Burton High School Wednesday night. Rocket junior, Paul Vogel, pinned his Northwest Military Academy opponent in six seconds in the 112-pound weight class. That broke the old state record. The pin also tied a national Federation mark. But that still has to be cleared by Federation officials. Vogel has an umblemished record of 15-0 and 11 pins this season. Richmond-Burton defeated the academy 42-30, but lost to Valley Lutheran of St. Charles 32-27.. Rescue 50 Postponed Many area residents are thrilled with the slight snowfall that McHenry County has experienced so far this yeaFTbut the Garmony Snowmobile Club is desperate for the ingredient that will bring the Johnsburg and McHenry Rescue Squads some needed money from pledges. The 50 mile snowmobile marathon is postponed until Jan. 16, which was orginally set aside as a snow date. If there is still no snow on that date, we may postponed it still another week or two. A total of 150 riders is expected this year. We all would like to make the ride and not trailer the machines as we did three years ago because of no snow. The ride, becoming more popular each year, will be honored by Rick Rueschel, Larry Bittner, Scott Thomp son, Len Dressier and other well known celebrity's. This year there will be prizes for the youngest and oldest rider, the oldest machine rider, the top five pledge riders, etc. There will also be 24 T-shirts given away. Forttnore information about the ride, call Jim Wright (chairman) at 385-9448, or Judy Mazrin 344-2929. Every wage earner, even though they are active participants in an employer sponsored pension plan, can make tax-sheltered contributions to an Individual Retirement Account (I.R.A.). Your I.R.A contributions will accumulate tax-deferred with compounded interest until retirement. The following are some of the important points concerning the new pension regulations. WHAT IS AN INDIVIDUAL RETIREMENT ACCOUNT (I.R.A.)? An I.R.A is a personal tax sheltered retirement savings plan. Millions of American workers are using I.R.A's to both reduce their taxes and build a more secure future for themselves and their families. ' WHO NEEDS AN I.R.A.? Just about everyone who wants to retire comfortably. To maintain your current life style it is estimated that you will need between 70% - 80% of your pre-retirement income when you retire. Since Social Security will contribute only about 30% and a pension plan approximately 30% more jin I.R.A can make the difference for a comfortable, independent retirement. ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF I.R.A.'S? Yes. Contributory I.R.A's are for wage earning individuals. Spousal I.R.A's are for married couples where only one spouse is employed. WHAT ARE THE MAXIMUM CONTRIBUTIONS? The CQfllribution for Contributory I.R.A is up to (2,000. The contribution for Spousal I.R.A. is up to $2,250. WHEN ARE TAXES PAID? No Federal income tax is paid on either savings or interest until distribution begins. At that time most individuals are in a lower tax bracket, with perhaps more exemptions available so that the tax savings can be considerable. WHEN ARE THE BENEFITS PAID? Anytime after 59%, but payments must start before 70H... or upon permanent disability or upon death (to named beneficiaries). You may elect to receive your retirement benefits in a lump sum or if you wish on a regular scheduled basis. HOW ARE BENEFITS TAXED? Benefits are taxed as ordinary income as they are received in a taxable year. If you choose to receive your benefits in a lump sum, you may be able to use the five-year income averaging provisions available to all taxpayers. HOW IS AN I.R.A. STARTED? Opening an I.R.A is as easy as opening a Savings Account. Don't wait because you probably will have a difficult time saving up enough money in a short time • so start now. HDW DOES I.R.A. SAVE ME TAX DOLLARS? For Federal income tax purposes, contributions to your I.R.A are fully deductible from gross income, up to the maximum allowed by law. You may make this deduction even though you do not itemize other deductions. During the years the.plan is in force, earned interest is also added to your I.R.A These earnings are also tax-deferred. Compounding of the interest over the years generates more dollars to build a retirement fund significantly larger than would be possible with taxed vdol lars. In addition, you realize further benefit because your I.R.A contribution puts you in a lower tax bracket _ ( (100% of compensation, whichever is less) COME IN AND WE WILL DISCUSS A PLAN TO SUIT YOU I A FULL SERVICE BANK ALWAYS SERVING YOU ALL WAYS!
