[ Soop Beat ] Fantasy figure Arrants gets fantastic letters By Connie Passalacqua Long before bloQd, curly- haired Tony Geary became soaps' main male idol, women viewers were sigh ing over the charms of simi larly coiffed Rod Arrants, who has been playing Travis Sentell on "Search for Tomorrow" for the past four years. "SFT," normally a low- rated show, saw its ratings soar soon after Travis began a romance with the show's heroine Liza Kaslo (Sherry Mathis). For most women, Travis was a fanta sy figure -- A billionaire, swashbuckling hero and brilliant scientist who flew around the world. Says Arrants of his small- screen character, "Travis' hero quality was something different from others in daytime television." Although Arrants initially received the usual male idol fan letters, including mar riage proposals and ren dezvous offers, he soon received requests for money. "Travis is a billionaire," he says, "so I get lots of interesting requests to finance scientific projects or to pay for operations. Sometimes you're really moved by what people Rod Arrants and Sherry Mathis write to you about. I- may be like Travis in some ways, but havihg a billion dollars is not one of them." Arrants was born and raised in Los Angeles and started his career with minor roles on nighttime television. In 1976 he came to New York to play wealthy Austin Cushing on the defunct daytime serial "For Richer, For Poorer." Although the show was a failure, Arrants reaped his own brand of success when he married actress Pat Estrine, who blayed his sister. Each has <i son from their former mar iages and the combined fanily lives in a renovated brownstone in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. (c) 1983 Compulog
