SERVING NORTHERN ILLINOIS FOR OVER It YEARS Scuba Diving See the underwater world as the fish see it! Let us, the Lake Region YMCA, introduce you to this new and exciting world. To safely enjoy the sport of scuba diving, you must receive proper in struction and become certified as a S.C.U.B.A. diver. The national YMCA developed the very first organized S.C.U.B.A course here in the Chicago Metropolitan area. The Lake Region YMCA has offered classes in S.C.U.B.A. diving starting with the opening of our pool. Our next class is scheduled to begin on Thur sday, Jan. 27 and also a class is scheduled to begin on Friday, Jan. 28, both at 7 p.m. The three-hour class consists of one anti a half hours of classroom and one and a half hours of pool work, meetin weekly for nine weeks. An open water checkout dive must be successfully completed in order to obtain cer tification. Registration for these SrC.U.B.A. classes is available at the Lake Region YMCA at 7315 South Route 31 in Crystal Lake. Swimming Classes The Lake Region YMCA is offering the following swimming programs for pre-schoolers beginning the week of Jan. 24 and concluding the week of March 28. Most of these programs will meet once a week for ten weeks. A gym and swim program is available for children from four months of age to six years old. The infant and to six-years old. The infant and toddlers swimming classes in- clude a 15 minute gym class which includes tumbling, excercises and coordination skills using special equipment. All of the swimming is 30 minutes in length led by the aquatic staff. They gym and swim program for three to six-year olds has been renamed. The classes are still offered for three differnt levels. The Tadpole Red class is beginning, Tadpole White is intermediate and Tadpole Blue is the advanced pre-school class. All of these classes are offered at various times througout the day. There is also a 30 minute swim instruction for Tadpoles at all levels; plus there are Tadpole classes for six-years olds only. P-Nut Diving for six-year olds is available on Tuesday afternoon. The participants will work on basic front and back dives starting with the side of the pool and progressing to the diving board. Pre-schoolers must be able to swim in deep water. Taddiwogs is a class for six-year- olds designed to work on the stroke development of front crawl, back crawl and the start of br&aststroke, plus strength and endurance. This class meets on Thursday or Saturday. f/4Ut i - rL/iiiMUh/iixn - r IYIW/\ i , i jK iun«» Scoreboard 11 Basketball Northwest Suburban Conference I ^ L Warren 4' 0 Antioch tj "~3 1 Grayslake * , 3 2 Round Lake 1 3 Wauconda l 3' Lake Zurich 2 2 Grant 2 2 Johnsburg 1 4 Fox YiUj/y Conference W L Pts. STAFF PHOTO -- MIKE LAMB Roundup Special Olympics For the second straight year, the Illinois Special Winter Olympics has chosen Eagle River Resort in the Galena Territory and Chestnut Moutain in Galena as sites for the 1983 Winter games, Feb. 1-3. The games will draw 300 state-wide participants and 100 coaches. In vitations have also been sent to the Iowa Special Olympics which presently does not hold winter games. These special athletes will seek personal victories as they race along the Eagle Ridge 40 kilometer cross country ski trails and down the Chestnut Moutain slopes, competing for the winning Gold Medal. )(J< n(f This year, skating competition will be held in Dubuque, Iowa (across the Mississippi from Galena) at the Five Flags Center skating rink. Honorary coaches of the young skaters are two- time Olympic speed-skating medalist, Dianne Holum, who now heads the staff of the Parkside Sport and Fitness Center in Park Ridge and figure skating champions, Gordon and Kathy McKellen of Rockford. Honorary trainer of this year's Special Olympics is Gene Gieselmann, trainer for the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals and the ABC Superstars. He will open the Olympics by leading the Welcoming Parade and festivities in Galena Feb. 1. Other sports celebrities are ex pected as well. Men's Open Gym The Men's Open Gym Night sponsored by the City of McHenry Department of Parks and Recreation started up again on Monday nights. This program is relatively un structured open play basketball, that provides fun and excercise for men of all ages. This is a drop in program for men 18 years of age and over. It will be held every Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Parkland Junior High School Gym. r a 1 ALEXANDER r • LUMBER CO.
