' Members, front row, left, are Mike Nederhouser, Laura The eighth annual McHenry County Honors Bands festival will be held Sunday, Jan. 23 with concerts at 2 p.m. in the McHenry West high school auditorium and at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of H. D. Jacobs high school in Algonquin. The honors concert and jazz bands will be under the direction of Larry Livingston, dean of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice university in Houston, Texas. This is the seventh consecutive year that Livingston has directed the bands. Unlike many massed festival bands, the McHenry/'County Honors Bands represent the best players from the high schools in the county performing in a select and well-balanced band. The members of the jazz band are chosen by competitive audition, the concert band members are nominated by their home band directors and are seated by competitive audition. Tickets are available from band members and will also be available at the door. FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 19, -1933). Members of the McHenry County Business and Professional club gathered at the Cadillac cafe on Riverside drive for their regular monthly dinner and meeting. A delicious dinner was served by Mrs. Harold Freund and her assistants, with table decorations in the colors of red, white and blue because of the patriotic nature of the program. Miss Frances Vycital of McHenry was chairman of the arrangements and was assisted by Mrs. C. W. Goodell. McHenry is set for the staging of one of the most interesting county meetings of Legionnaires held in many months. The meeting will be held at the Bridge Tavern. Four speakers will appear on the program. Captain Billy Rossdeutcher, assistant warden at Joliet prison, will tell of prison life at the state penitentiary. Lieutenant Donald Spangler of Fort Sheridan will be another speaker. The annual ski jump was held at the Cary slide. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 21, 1943). For the past several months, Ed­ ward E. Matthews, former phar­ macist at Bolger's drug store, has been in the Navy. At first he was stationed at Great Lakes, and now is at the Naval Armory in Chicago. At the annual meeting of the stockholders of the West McHenry State bank, the same directors were elected for the ensuing year. They are William M. Carroll, C. J. Reihan- sperger, William A. Nye, M.D., Jos. W. Freund and Gerald J. Carey. The Henry Kinsala family this week received word from their son, George, the first McHenry man to leave after the inception of the selective service, that he had arrived in North Africa shortly before the first of the year. He writes of spending New Year's eve playing phonograph records with his buddies and singing until midnight. He reports the weather much like California, warm during the day and cool at night. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 23, 1958). At the City Council meeting Lakeland Construction company's contract for installation of 12-inch storm sewer on West Main street was reported completed to meet with engineer's approval and payment ordered in the amount of $3,912.55. A detailed report of the status of new sewer lift in Edgebrook Heights was reviewed and payment in the amount of $8,006.62 was authorized. It is reported that the lift will be com­ pleted and in operation soon. Two deaths were at least partially blamed on extreme weather condit­ ions this week in the McHenry area. At West Shore Beach, McCullom Lake, Hei*bert Von Eller, 60, died while attempting to start his car. His death was said to be due to a heart attack. Harry Anderson of Wonder Lake died while shoveling snow. Gerald J. Carey was re-elected president and C. J. Reihansperger was named vice-president of McHenry State bank. Robert L. Weber was elevated to the position of executive vice-president and Thomas F. Bolger was promoted ip the office of cashier. James F.JflLarkin and Vernon E. Harrison were re-elected assistant cashiers. Lucille Knox, Donald Wattles and Richard J. Zieman were named assistant cashiers. Ellen Walsh was renamed auditor. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 17, 1973). The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be observed in McHenry and many other parts of the county. The first service this year will be held at Faith Presbyterian church. Rev. Edmund Petit of St. Patrick's church will preach on the theme, "Called to Freedom". The host pastor, Jack Mclntyre, will be joined by other clergymen and laymen in the service of worship. Three directors have been nominated for three-year terms each on the board of directors of McHenry hospital corporation. The 1939 classic comedy by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart will be performed in-the-round in the Johnsburg high school auditorium. The play is about Sheridan Whiteside, a famous lecturer, author, critic and radio personality. The pompous and egocentric Mr. Whiteside is havinfe dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Stanley while on his lecture tourjn Ohio. As he enters the Stanley home, he slips on the ice, falls on the stairs and breaks his hip. Whiteside, his secretary and his nurse are confined to the Stanley home for the next six wedcs. The cast of "^The Man Who Came to Dinner" includes many JHS theatre veterans along with several newcomers. Senior Paul Metzger plays Sheridan Whiteside and Linda Davidson, also a senior, plays his secretary Maggie Cutler. Newspaper reporter Bert Jefferson is played by M. J. Anderson and Lisa Boyer plays glamourous Lorraine Sheldon. Sheldon. Whiteside's nurse and doctor are played by sophomores Missy Davis atfd Ed Foster.
