PAliK V1NDEALER - WEDNESDAVAANUARY 26.1983 ( Leadership Award To Helen Smith Helen M. Smith, president of the auxiliary to McHenry hospital, was recently recognized as an outstanding volunteer in the state of Illinois, when she received the Leadership award from the Illinois Hospital association. The Leadership award is earned by auxilians, volunteers and directors of volunteer services who further their education by attending four educational workshops or meetings during a twelve-month period. In a recent survey conducted by the Council on Volunteers of the Illinois Hospital association, member hospitals reported auxiliaries con tributed over seven and one-half million dollars to their hospitals during 1981. Direct service by volunteers and auxilians to their hospitals totalled almost four million Hours. " The Illinois Hospital association is a non-profit voluntary organization of over 250 institutional health care HELEN M. Mrs. Smith was the only recipient from McHenry hospital (Northern Illinois Medical center), this year. In her capacity as auxiliary president, Mrs. Smith also serves on the hospital's board of directors, and is a member of the building and planning committee. An auxilian for six years, she was elected president in 1981. and will conclude her term of office later this month. A McHenry resident for 30 years, Mrs. Smith was a certified ophthalmic medical assistant, and served as president of the McHenry county chapter of the American Association of Medical Assistants in 1965, as chairman of the AAMA state con vention, and as president of the state AAMA, Illinois society in 1968 and 1969. Mrs. Smith and her husband, Ralph, Sr., have two children and four grandchildren. When she retired from her active professional life she renewed the goal she'd set for herself as a student nurse, and that was to make a lasting contribution of some kind to a hospital's program. "I found the auxiliary and volunteer options were ideal for giving service. making a worthwhile effort to an important cause, and personally enriching. The men and women who volunteer, or work on auxiliary projects, are a group of talented, dedicated, and generous people. I highly recommend the experience to all who find they have time on their hands, or want to direct their efforts toward a project that will have a positive impact on their community. "Now that our building project is well under way, I feel my years as president of the auxiliary have been both demanding and rewarding. It's been an honor to serve at this time of growth and transition. However, whether a person wants to become as involved as I have, or to work on something periodically, they'll find being an auxilian is never boring, and certainly makes use of an individual's talent and civic interest. "Membership in the organization is a good way to meet interesting new friends and to keep your life from becoming static. In fact, many of our members are working wives and mothers who find time to squeeze in some volunteering and project work, just because of the satisfaction they derive from this." The weather was ideal and the meeting proved to be very successful. President Earl Swanson presided. Music was furnished by the high school band. The Altar and Rosary sodality of St. Patrick's church will sponsor a public card party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Walsh on Court street. There will be prizes and lunch and admission will be 25 cents. Uldine Utley, the girl preacher who visited McHenry friends last summer and about whom a story appeared in the columns of the Plaindealer, is now conducting a series of revival meetings at the M.E. church in Elgin. During the past week the large church has been crowded with interested listeners at every service with the 20- year-old preacher talking on world events. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 21, 1943) Yes, at last something and somebody has nosed their way out of the headlines. The something is the weather and the somebody the weather man. Old man winter started work early this year and is really persistent in his efforts to make the very act of living difficult. Some folks are even convinced he is working for the government in making roads so bad that of necessity, we will save gasoline. Ear muffs, fur coats, galoshes, shovels and car chains are among the most depleted stocks on local merchants' shelves since a continued snowfall of several days was tagged by a howling wind which piled drifts many feet high. Schools were closed for two days and the temperature hovered at varying points between ten and twenty-five degrees below zero. A check-up on the number of ser vicemen from this vicinity now receiving the Plaindealer reveals that 220 are now on our mailing list. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 23, 1958) ... ,. , Chairman Leonard Pawlikowski of the McHenry Kiwanis club and Chairman Joseph Cina of the McHenry Township Kiwanis club are completing plans for a joint in stallation of officers. Clarence Niesen is the newly elected president of the McHenry club and George Peterson is head of the township club. Dan Creamer, McHenry businessman, is the newly elected president of the Chamber of Com merce and will be installed at the annual installation meeting to be held early in February. Mrs. Harry Stinespring will be featured as guest at the meeting of the Lecture Luncheon club to be held at the McHenry Country club. She will present a dramatic monologue, "A Woman's World". With all of the new equipment designed especially to remove the beautiful snowfall, it became in creasingly difficult to move about by any means Tuesday. In fact, it was so difficult that the local bank reports it was the first time in 30 years that an auction in their charge had to be postponed. ^ TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 19, 1973) Supt. of Public Works Fred Meyer informed the City Council that the state had granted permission to in stall traffic lights at three locations on Route 120, west of the railroad tracks. The three intersections on the high way are at Crystal Lake road, In dustrial drive and Meadow lane. The state's o.k. was based on traffic count figures taken at these locations by the city and then submitted to state of ficials. Sixteen-year-old Ron Ahlberg of McHenry begins his summer vacation this month. He learned last week that after he completes his semester work next Friday at West campus, he will take a few weeks away from classes before embarking on a brand new experience as an Americans Abroad student. Ron is the first such student to represent the local chapter. He will leave home Feb. 16 for Santa Cruz, located in the province of Colchaga, Chile. Red Cross.
