The Johnsburg wrestling team recieved a big boost for its young program. The Skyhawks were assured of a .500 season with a victory over Marian, 34-24. Don March set 1982 expectations at .500 record for his program which was only in its second year. They were 7-6 with one match to go. The Warrior wrestling team started the new year with a 12th place at the Boylan tournament. They split the other two matches, defeating Streamwood 37-23 and losing to Dundee 45-12. FEBRUARY February is the month which the basketball season dwindles down to the point in which only the strongest will continue playing in March. The only boys team to survive long enough to see March was the Marian Hurricanes. The Month, however, didn't start real well for the Hurricanes, as Harvard avenged a loss to them. But, they came back with a win over Johnsburg, before getting wiped by Woodstock 89-61. The Hurricanes survived its brutal beating by their cross town rival and defeated Richmond-Burton in the regional opener 72-64. The win raised Marian's overall record to 13-9 and Tim Truckenbrod led all scorers with 20 points. The McHenry Warriors started the month off with its last win of the season. They defeated Cary-Grove 54- EALER - FRID\Y, JANUARY 28,1983 51 and it was the only the Warriors third win of the season, matched with 12 losses. Mike Burdgorf led Warrior scoring with 14 points. Bill Herrmann and Mike Bauml scored 12 points each. The win was followed with losses to Woodstock, Crown, Libertyville, Dundee and Zion. . | Johnsburg ended its season with a regional loss to Marengo 70-48. „The Skyhawks finished with a 6-19 record. But. the month did start in better fashion then it ended. The 'Hawks blaseted Hebron 92-55, but then lost to Fox Valley Conference Jacobs. The Skyhawks were 0-3 against FVC teams. They also lost games to Marengo and Hononegah Another area winner was Buss Ford-Sport Stop They won the McHenry Parks and Recreational basketball title over Christopher's Men's Wear 73-56 Jim Hear scored 21 for the winners and Ken Ludwig scored 14 for Christopher's. The League champs also won the tour nament championship over Hiller Construction. Ben Beck led all scorers with 26 points. The Warriors girls' basketball team lost its first game of the month against FVC leader Crystal Lake South, but then came back with two victories over Jacobs and Woodstock to move into third place in the FVC. They finished off the month two more victories over Crown and Cary-Grove and evened their FVC record at 6-6. The Ladies, however ended the tournament with a loss to Forrest View 61-36. Karpavcius led in scoring with 14 points and she grabbed 14 rebounds in the losing cause. After losing to Woodstock the next weekend, the Lady Warriors won their first Fox Valley Conference game, defeating Crystal Lake Central 37-27. Again, Karpavicius led the Warriors in scoring with 17 points -- 15 in the first half. They would win one more conference game and lose one and then close out the month with a loss to North Chicago 50-41. The Johnsburg Skyhawk varsity boys basketball team won a few ballgames and even broke a few scoring records. They started the new year with a 65-60 overtime victory over Richmond-Burton. The game was tied at 56 after regualtion play. The Skyhawks converted on seven of nine free throws in the winning surge. Jeff Bartmann led in scoring with 20 points. The scoring record breaking came against Northwest Military Academy. The Skyhawks defeated the academy 101-57. The previous scoring record for a Johnsburg team was 93 points against North Boone in 1979-80. * It was a good month for the Skyhawks, as they closed it out with a big win over Harvard, 52-51. Jeff Fowler was the hero in the game as he hit the winning shot as time ran out. It was a big win for the Skyhawks, because Harvard beaten them twice before in the season. Even the McHenry Warriors boys basketball team opend up the month with a win. Suffering through its worse season in several years, the Warriors defeated Crown 72-62, but lost to Fremd 58-48 the next day. The Warriors lost another game to then state ranked Crystal Lake South 62-35. Marian Central also won its first game of the month, defeating Elgin St. Edwards 69-46 to raise its overall record to 7-4. But, Marian lost to Marengo and Cary-Grove. "The month was spiced up a bit with the annual "Rescue 50" snowmobile marathon and Johnsburg's sixth annual Oldtimers Club "Hit and Run" baseball banquet. Former Chicago Cubs, Rick Reuschel and Larry Bittner attended the "Rescue 50." The benefit for the McHenry' and Johnsburg's rescue squads raised over $10,000. The Oldtimers Club baseball banquet was attended by Cubs an nouncer Vine Lloyd -- who amceefd, Ross Baumgarten of the White Sox, National League Umpire Bruce Froeming, Chicago Tribune sport- swriter Bob Logan, John Cox of the Cubs front office and former Plain- dealer sports editor Earl Walsh.
