Skyhawks Are Rammed By Grayslake MIKE LAMB JOHNSBUEG -- Johnsburg Skyhawk Coach Ben Beck didn't exactly no why? All he knew was that his team just couldn't score points against Northwest Suburban Con ference opponent, Grayslake. No points means another loss for the Harvard Breaks Away From Marian HARVARD -- Craig Carlson found his groove Saturday night. And Carlson's hot hand in the third quarter was enough to turn a nip-and-tuck game in to an 80-60 victory over Marian Central. The Hornets forward, who had a season-high 27 points, pepped the perimeter with 14 third-quarter points to power Harvard to an 18-point 53-35 lead at the end of the period. That was a far cry from the slim 27-23 lead the Hornets held at halftime. "We've got to sustain this," Har vard coach Bruce Firchau said. "We can't play well one game and play off the next game." In the first half, Marian Central used its quickness and pinpoint passing to stay a step ahead of Har vard most of the way. Marian, now 7-12, held the lead no fewer than eight times in the first half, and the teams were tied nine times. The Hurricanes and Hornets traded baskets and free throws in the first quarter to end the period in an 11-11 deadlock. "Marian Central is a well-coached ballclub," Firchau said. "In the first half, Marian Central just moved the ball real well on offense." Lady 'Hawks Lose 3rd In a Row JOHNSBURG -- The Lake Zurich Bears handed the Johnsburg Skyhawks girls basketball team, its thinl loss in a row, 58-24. The 'Hawks are now 0-6 in the Northwest Suburban Conference and 3-8 overall. "We didn't shoot very well, shooting 19 percent from the floor," said Nancey Fahey, coach of Johnsburg. "They had good outside shooting. They were popping them in from all over. We got in foul trouble and I went to a zone. But it didn't work to well. They were hitting from the outside on the top of the key." Kathy Butler led Skyhawks scoring with six points. Parks & Recreation Recreational Basketball MEN'S A LEAGUE Buss-Sport Stop def. The Rams raised their conference mark to 5-3. "We didn't shoot very well," ex plained Beck. "The team is shooting in the upper 40's percentile. We got good shots inside, but couldn't get inside the bucket. "Our shot selection was very good and we got the ball to people. It was just not going in." The Skyhawks scoring problem was very evident in the third quarter. The Rams only held a 20-19 advantage going into halftime and it looked like Johnsburg would make a game of it. But the Rams outscored the Skyhawks 12-2 in the first five minutes of the quarter. The Rams weren't exactly burning up the nets, but the Skyhawks just couldn't score to keep pace. The second Skyhawk basket in the quarter came from Jeff Preston at the 1:35 mark. The 'Hawks would score only two more points, two free throws from Jeff Fowler, before the quarter ended. Fowler led Skyhawk scoring with a paltry 10 points. The Rams outscored the Skyhawks 20-6 in the third quarter and a close game was turned into a route. "I was pleased by the steady defensive play. If it woudn't have been for that poor shooting second half, the score would have been different," said Beck. The Rams started the game strong, taking a 8-2 lead. The Skyhawks were sparked, however, by Larry Zuley, who sank a fieldgoal while being fouled and made the free throw for a three point play. A shot by Jeff Fowler at the buzzer closed in the Rams lead at 11-9. Jim Leon then tied the contest with an easy layup and Grayslake took a timeout to talk things over. That did little good, as Tom Meehan gave the Skyhawks the lead for the first time, 13-11, sinking two free throws. The 'Hawks built a 17-13 lead before the Rams woke up by scoring seven straight points. Preston sank two free throws for the Skyhawks before the half ended. Beck mentioned th?t his team only made seven of 28 field goal attempts in that first half. His team finished the game with only 14 total fieldgoals. The Skyhawks kept pace with the Rams in the final quarter, only being outscored 19-17. Russ Nygaard, a 6-foot-4 center, led Ram scoring with 17 points. Both Zuley and Preston finished second in Skyhawk scoring with nine each. PAGE 7 - PLA1NDEALER - WEDNESDAY.
