Using synthesiz er and vocoder (which fortui tously disguises his voice) as well as conventional folk-rock style, he is setting out to bridge some large gaps in modern music. The concept succeeds much better than one would expect. This will be a treat for Young fans disappointed by his last two paltry outings, and may introduce him to some new lis teners as well. It's a great case for teaching old dogs new tricks. Neil Young Summers A Fripp -- "/ Advance Masked" (A & M) -- The guitar duo of Andy Summers (the Police) and Robert Fripp (King Crimson. League of Gentlemen) sounds like background music for the kind of movie that requires subtitles. But this instrumental piece, on which the twosome did everything from composi tion to production, comes across so technically superla tive that it is enjoyable despite its obtuseness Little Steven and the Disci ples of Soul -- "Men Without Women" (EMI) -- If you rec ognize a slightly Sprmgsteen- ish sound in this debut, don't be surprised. Little Steven is "Miami" Steve Van Zandt. the Boss' guitarist/producer Here he turns to Stax-style soul, a noble effort enlivened by sin cerity and energy. The vocals may be weak, but the feeling is strong. UPDATE Men at Work has finished the follow-up to its phenome nally successful debut album. It's to be called "Cargo" and should be available in March. Currently at work on new products are: Quarterflash. cutting its second; Talking Heads, enjoying a working hol iday at Compass Point Studios in Nassau; Z.Z. Top. finishing a new one for Warner Broth ers; Johnny Rivers, recording a gospel album. Huey Lewis and the News, finishing its third for Chrysalis; and "Dreamgirl" Jennifer Holli- day, debuting with a solo "out ing on Geffen. Adam Ant has signed to act m a movie. He will appear with Britain's blonde bombshell of the 1950s, Diana Dors, in a film called "Yellowbird " • Rocking for charity - Prince gave a benefit, concert for Marva Collins' now-famous West Side Preparatory school and raised $14,000 fo( the' organization.
