"Australia's Animal Mysttfries" are profiled when the "National Geographic Special" airs Wednesday, Feb 9 on PBS. (Air dates may vary; please check local listings.) When Australia broke away from Antarctica 50 million years ago the world's largest island and smallest continent started to develop animal life as unique and exotic as the landscape. The hour-long documentary, underwritten by the Gulf Oil Cnrp features one of the world's most beloved creatures -- the koala bear Tourists love to catch the gentle creature posmg. However, in some parts of the country, scientists have fyund that the koala's birth rate is declining. Investigators are still trying to piece the puzzle together. The best known Australian native is probabiy the kangaroo, it? astounding leaping -- as much as 25 feet in one bound -- is filmed at close range and in slow motion. Also shown is the plight -of newborn kangaroos. At birth, they are blind and yveigh less than an ounce as they negotiate the journey through the.mother's thick fur to the protection and nourish­ ment in its mother's pouch. The koala and kangaroo are just two of "Australia's Animal Mysteries " Approximately 150 species of marsupials -- pouched animals -- can be found on the continent.
