PAGE 7 -PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, FEBRU ARY 1983 Tooth And Nail Rivalry The Warriors travel to Woodstock to take on an old foe, the Blue Streaks .of new coach Gordon Tebo. Over the years these two squads have battled tooth and nail. All things considered, it is probably one of the biggest rivalries in this part of the state. Upsets by both teams have taken place, lopsided scores (Warriors 61-0 football win in 1962), scoreless games in football, overtimes in basketball, extra innings in baseball and when each season comes around, no matter what the event, both schools have great respect for one another. The Warriors split a pair last weekend, defeating Cary-Grove 73-60, while playing a poor defensive game according to Ken Ludwig. Saturday night the Warriors just were not in it, as they dropped a game to the Dundee Cardunals. With the closing of Dundee High School, their is a lot of emotion these days. Plaques have been handed out to various teams in remembrance of the final year.^With the crowd and players involved in the cermonies, it is difficult for a visiting team to overcome the highly spirited Cards in a home contest. With their final home game on Feb. 11, the Cards are going to honor previous players, cheerleaders and managers -- especially the state champions of 1938. The Warriors will play a home game against the Tigers of Crystal Lake Central next Tuesday, Feb. 8. Again, game time for the sophomores is 6 p.m. Marty Sobczak's "Rassling Warriors" dropped a close match to Central last Thursday by the score of 33-30. Mike Love at 132-pounds ran his record to 16-7-1 for the season. John Keevil at 105-pounds had a pin for the Warriors. Tonight and tomorrow the Warriors are at Jacobs for the Fox Valley Conference meet. Crown, who was undefeated in dual meets in the conference and has lost only to state power DeKalb, is the favorite, along with Woodstock On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt and Crystal Lake South. Let's hope the Warriors can come up with a championship or two in the meet. Mike Shanahan's swimmers defeated Streamwood last week, with Darren Cepulis winning the 200 and 500 yard freestyle. Bob Schaefer won the 200 yard Individual medley, along with the 100 yard breaststroke. The 200 yard realy team of Hall, Schaefer, Greg Karczynski and McNish, along with the 400 yard relay team of Karczynski, Cepulis and Rich Miller were winners. Down memory lane this week, we take you back to the 1958-59 season when the Warriors won their only basketball conference championship with a ll-i record in the North Suburban Conference. The only loss was to Zion late in the season 63-57. The game we have is the first Woodstock game, when the Warriors won is an easy fashion 83-54. All five starters scored in double figures and even when Coach Cliff Fulton cleared the bench, everyone scored that played. * Lets hope the Warriors can do likewise tonight. "As far as execution, it was our best game, it was a good effort," said Skyhawk coach Nancy Fahey. "We had a coupe key mental lapses, but I'm happy with the execution. Overall they did a good job." The game was close most of the way, as the halftime score was 28-26, Grayslake. The Skyhawks had suc cess going inside to Swartzloff, a forward. "We finally worked the ball inside and pressed the boards on offense. That's were our scoring punch came from," said Fahey. Sled Dog Racing Sled Dog Racing is coming to the Chicagoland area Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 19-20. The Stroh's Fox Valley Sled Dog Race will be held in St. Charles at the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve off Dean Street, Vt mile west of Randall Road. There is no admission charge for spectators. The races will run from noon to dusk both days. The McHenry Warrior boys' swimming team won their third meet in a row, defeating Zion-Benton Tuesday at the West Campus Swimming pool 74-52. The Warrior evened their record to 4-4. Warrior swimming coach Mike Shanahan is pleased with the progress of his team. "We are starting to have our young guys coming around. Kids like Terry Harth. We got our divers back. Those two things have helped us get some wins." The Warrior 200 yard medley relay team started the meet with a first place with a time of 1:55.64. Members of that team are; Greg Hall, Bob Schaefer, Darren Cepulis and Mike McNish. Both Cepulis and Rich Miller turned in two first places for the Warriors. STAFF PHOTO -- MIKE LAMB Scots Rally Falls One Point Short To Oakton 61-60 BARB ANSELL CRYSTAL LAKE -- It was a late second half rally which found the McHenry County College Scots falling short at the buzzer, loosing to Oakton Community College 61-- 60. "Those guys just didn't quit," said MCC coach Bruce Harbecke . "They gave 120 percent effort right up until the final second." Unable to break out of their normal routine, the Scots opened the game on a sour note. The Scots put up 31 shots from the field, but were only able to connect on nine shots. The Oakton Raiders on the other hand, hit the mark on 50 percent of their first half field goal attempts, to command a 31--22 half- time lead. The opening minutes of the second half looked though Oakton had the situation wrapped up, expanding their already large lead to 58-45 with three minutes left. But the Scots sud denly got hot and managed to sink every shot put up. Coming down the final stretch it was the work of Scots Ken Haldeman, Rob McMahon, and Tom Popovich that sparked a glimmer of hope for the Scots. With 30 seconds left Haldeman connected a shot from the top of the key bringing the Scots within two 60-58. McHenry however, fouled Oakton's Rusty Becker with 13 seconds and sent Becker to the line for a one-and-one shot. Becker's first shot edged the Raiders up 61- 58, but his second shot was missed. McMahon scooped up the the rebound and passed off to Popovich who took the ball down court for the lay-up, cutting the Raiders lead to one point. Again a foul was charged against the Scots, this time before the ball could be put back into play by the Raiders. It sent O a k t o n ' s D a v e Matkovic to the free throw line, where he missed the shot. Mark Wilkinson took hold of the rebound, passed the ball to Haldeman. Haldeman put the shot up from half court. The ball hit the backboard and bounced off the rim at the buzzer, once again keeping the Scots from a conference win. Harbecke who says the fans may not realize how much the team has improved since the first of the year, praised their support. "It was nice of the fans to en courage and continue their support through the final seconds." Haldeman played an outstanding game, leading the team with 19 points and 11 assists. Wilkinson also scored in double figures with 14 points and 12 rebounds.. And Popovich with several key steals had 10 points for the night. The Scot overall records falls to 1-16 and t h e i r c o n f e r e n c e records drops to 0-6.
