The students were interviewed and ap proved by a vote of the board mem bers which include four faculty members and two students. The co-managers of WVKC will be Derek Gilbert, McHenry, and Carla Moradi, 1650 West Byron, Chicago. Gilbert has had considerable ex perience with community radio and served as co-manager this year. Ms. Moradi has worked as music librarian and program director for WVKC. To kick off its twentieth anniversary, the McHenry County Historical society will center this season's Sunday programs around the local histories of as many cities, villages, and communities in McHenry county as possible. On those special days, residents from the honored com munity will be invited free to the society's museum in Union. Starting all the festivities will be Woodstock at the museum Sunday, May 1, from 1:30 to 4:30, featuring a number of special exhibits being brought in for the day by local Woodstock area residents. Post cards, business trade cards, photographs and old photographic equipment used in Woodstock, early city records, bottles, club and Opera House histories, and Sanborn fire maps on loan from the Woodstock Public library are just a few of many exhibits being arranged. Sanborn Fire Maps show the location and dimensions of all structures in a city at the time the map was drawn. Some of these maps go back to the 1880'? and are ideal references for those searching out the histories of older homes. These unique local artifacts added to the society's vast and growing collection of Woodstock area materials should provide something for the entire family to enjoy. Beginning in Woodstock back in 1963 out of a meeting attended by representatives from organizations from throughout the county, the Historical society was chartered and began the task of organizing itself and discovering and collecting materials illustrating that history. All artifacts in the collection have been donated. Purchasing the old Union school in 1971, the museum finally opened to the public on July 4,1976. Since that time the society has been active in plaquing local historical sites and structures, providing special school and other group programs, making available traveling exhibits, holding adult workshops, working in local com munities to provide historical walking-biking-driving tour* and setting up a local history research library at the museum. The McHenry County Historical society is primarily a volunteer organization interested in bringing together those people interested in history, especially the history of McHenry county;. For more information abou£ the programs or on becoming a member of the society, contact the museum at 815-923-2267. \ A colony of honey bees may composed of as many as 90,Off) dividual bees. be in- ASHES HELP LAWN Wood stoves and fireplaces help conserve costly fossil fuel and at the same time produce a useful byproduct for lawns and gardens. Wood ash has value and can be used as a sup plement for promoting plant growth. Ash contains up to six percent potassium and two percent available phosphorus, both r e q u i r e d b y lawngrasses. Also, it has about thirty percent of the neutralizing effect of ground limestone and thus helps keep soils from becoming more acid. A suitable rate of application generally consists of about twenty pounds per one thousand square feet, or the amount of ash needed to fill a five gallon pail. A reasonably efficient stove will yield this amount of ash per cord of wood. Wood ash should not be considered a sub stitute for lawn fer tilizer because it lacks the one ingredient that lawns need most. That is nitrogen. All lawn fertilizers contain nitrogen in the proper amount. A little wood ash can help supply some extra phosphorus and potassium and aid in sweetening the soil a Make sure the a$h has been screened to remove any nails or other metal that may have come from kin dling. Spread on a calm day as the ash is light and dusty. Used in this way, a little wood ash can benefit the lawn and give you a good feeling of helping to recycle a natural, renewable resource.
